okay, so I've read a few tutorials online about how to magnetize your skimmers.
here's the issue: Necron skimmers are extremely fickle. What I mean by this is they're either top heavy or back heavy and I cant seem to make it work. as you can tell from the pictures I've tried magnets and screws neither of which make the skimmer feel stable/sturdy. I dont feel confident pushing it across the table without it falling off its base.
If anyone has had past experience or suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. Save someone from botching their models like I did

I have a tip for you, something that worked well for me with Eldar skimmers.
Basically, it's a little plasticard inverted U on a 60mm round base, with a magnet in the top side and another, bigger magnet in the rump of the vehicle. The shape of the plasticard corresponds to the vehicles rump, locking it in place while the magnet holds it together.
That way my serpents stand level, strong - and can be transported in a plastic box with sheet metal like the rest of my army due to magnets under the bases.
Obviously, you can also do regular base deco on them. The plasticard bit can be painted in muted vehicle colour to look like a fin or something sticking out.
I've attached a picture of what I did. That picture was meant to show how my bases compare to the regular ones in height and size (which is quite irrelevant), but it should help bring the idea across.

Fascinating idea from Stephanius!!!
For the OP; you need magnet on magnet - or much stronger magnet on your base, and a very flat surface match on the screw head.
I would suggest getting some N52 rare earth magnets of 1/4" size, and use those with your similar technique. If you want to keep the screw in the bottom, epoxy the magnet to the screw head.

thanks Stephanius! never used plasticard before but I may give it a shot
davethepak I am using 1/4 rare earth magnets and have tried magnet to magnet although the magnet on the ghost ark was a bit smaller than 1/4

It seems to me that using 1/8th clear styrene rod as a replacement for the default flying stand peg would fix this problem. No magnet needed, just drill a 1/8th hole in the base of the model.

one super-simple technique i need to get on and do for mine (which i came up with not yesterday, lucky you) is you use lego technic bits. simply push together to fit, and no worries about wobbly magnets.

I think I might try to use a 40mm base with two rods for more support.

If detaching the bases is not a requirement, you can use a machine screw as a stand. This worked well for a friend on a metal ravenwing jetbike.
The idea is to drill a slightly undersized hole through the base and another into the bottom of the model. Undersize the hole just like you would if you would then break out the tap&die set to cut threads. In plastic - or white metal - cutting threads is not needed, the screw does the job by itself.
Add a bit of superglue between screw and base and between the screw and the model and it won't budge. Then apply deco to taste. Fixed (pun intended)!
