Hey hey! Welcome all.
I'm delighted to say that Christmas has come early for LDP this year, I purchased a small force of Iron Warriors consisting of:
Terminator Lord
Warpsmith
Warsmith
2 Chaos Space Marine Squads
5 CSM termies
5 Raptors
2 rhinos
Anyway, some of my diehard fans (yeah right) may have noticed a ~2 week Hiatus in where I was moving house, but now the new studio has been established, I figured what better a way to christen both it and the new technical paint series than with a new, gritty weathered army! So here's where I'm at so far. Hope you like it guys!

Cheers, LDP.

Hmmm...are they finished? I like the idea behind it and youre really going all in with the dark and gritty, which is commendable. As an army, im not sure im sold on this scheme. Im interested to see where this goes. Its definitely a different side of LDP

EDIT: I think changing the bases might be something to ponder over...

Yea i'm not sure. The scheme is serving many purposes for me. I want it to be quick and dirty, which it is, although some detail is missed as a result. And I see where you're coming from with the bases, I initially had agrellan earth on them, but that didn't work well, I was trying to catch the look of TemplarsCrusade01's DKOK bases, but...EHHHHHH

I can see why some people wouldn't like the models, but I really like the scheme you've gone for looks like they're in the middle of a land drawn out siege. The only thing I'd say is that it might be nice if there was a single point on the minis that your eyes are drawn to, like glowing eyes or power weapons.

That's a good call Gian. Yes I think that's what I need. I dont have many more custom iron warrior helmets in the force so when it gets to the default ones ill do some extravagant eyes. What do you think, osl? I'd need to learn hooooooooooow :\

Thanks for tuning in shingouki, more to come very soon!

I don't think OSL would be needed, just a focal point. The eyes, perhaps? Like gian said. Also, the weird blood stains on the rhino are distracting. They don't seem to belong where they are.

That being said, I really like the army currently! Subbed.

Yes, I felt the same, I think i'll subtlise them like I did with the blood on the champion's sword.

HERETIC!

With that out of the way, nice looking force. I'll second (third?) the fact you could do with some kind of focal point, but on the whole, the scheme looks fine. These gritty figures are a complete departure from the ultra-clean Ultramarines, but looks-wise they're just as good. Apart from some OSL (Which will look great with the dark scheme) I'd also suggest a tad more highlighting on the armour, just to break it up a little.

You mention the scheme being 'quick', how long are we talking here? Are you still layering or mostly using washes and weathering?

What was your experience like with the blood effect paint? I'm considering picking some up myself.

the method consists of black basecoat, boltgun metal basecoat followed by badab black wash. then I do the gold and black and miscellanious parts, wash them and then use typhus corrosion to weather, follow by a small ryza rust drybrush, then I apply blood effects. So it's not like i'm rushing

Thanks for the info, looks like a pretty simple yet good-looking method, and really shows off what can be done with the new special effect paints.

Looking forward to seeing more.

That warpsmith caught me off guard, I could almost not recognize the model. Outstanding job!

But where are the Ultramarines? <sob>

One things about having stuff that's gritty and weathered, is while realistic, it lacks any "pop" The fact that that blend in with their bases doesn't help much here. I think if you did arctic bases or a light desert base it would showcase the dark grit of the models themselves. Eye lenses, power weapons, trophy helmets, and the like are another spot where you could add some zing to the models.

The trophy helmets on the spikes really stand out for me. What chapter did they belong to? I can't tell. They might have been claimed centuries ago and dragged through the warp and back, but I'd like to be able to tell if they started life on Caliban or Macragge.

It might be that your other work has set such a high bar, but these guys just feel unfinished. It might be that they are. But even the test model you have first looks like he's waiting for the last step. I think it's the base. Because the mini and the base are so similar, it looks like the color/highlighting on the base itself might just be slop from when you worked on the mini. Which I doubt is actually the case, but that's how it looks to my eye.

I don't want to sound too critical. I love what you have here. The weathering is awesome. Love the hazard stripes and the rust and blood.

Dont feel bad Nevelon, sometimes critique is better than compliments all the time. Makes them mean less when people give them out as default. I agree with you, i quite like LDPs painting style with his other armies, yet as i commented above, these do seem a bit unfinished. I trrust LDP will make good decisions with whatever he decides to do with them. including leaving them as is

Hey LDP, hows about sharing some your Guard Comp pics on your main plogs so we can generate more interest Its a great mini!
