We'll be seeing a lot of runepriests. 60 pts for MR1, channel, AP for the unit, and the ability to buy magic defence is an amazing deal. I imagine any relatively significant dwarf unit will now take a runepriest.

Rare choices are, IMHO, stacked in the current book.

Organ Guns (roll on BS to hit, but use 2 artillery dice for number of shots, and can take runes, like the +1 to hit and have the BS buffed by a Master Engineer, 30" range)
Flame Cannon (can fire like the old Flame Cannon by using a starting target point 12" away, has multiple wounds d3, and can take runes)
Rangers
Gyrobombers
Irondrakes

It's going to be very, very easy to max out your Rare selection in the current book.

Unfortunately, the book only has two units that are completely new: Gyrobomber and Irondrakes.

The rumors of a "huge cannon" or "tunnelling device" or "ork smasher" might refer to a Forgeworld item or something, but they're not present in the book.

That's true- I suppose I was more getting at the fact that he was probably okay with his existing collection? But its more important where the points need to go in the new book than in the old...

Seriously. I've got a couple of ideas for lists percolating in my head. The simple idea is a straight up nasty gun-line with a Core of 45-50 Great Weapon Quarrellers backed up with either a block of Hammerers to try to kill stuff that gets through or a bus of Ironbreakers to tie up any scary unit that gets through, all backed up with about 1000 points of artillery (2 stone throwers, cannon, organ gun and 3-5 'copters of various types). I'm also kicking around an idea that includes rangers, two blocks with the strollaz rune and two 'copters with vanguard all backed up with some artillery and stuff.

I used to field two hordes of Rangers (when I had Bugman) and that's already more points than my rare allotment in a 2400-2500 pt army.

And on top of that I've got to make core requirement as well with different choices.

(it's not a collection issue - I've been playing for over 20 years and I have at least 10,000 points of dwarfs, but the style that I have been playing and want to play.)

They've taken something that's been a core choice since '93 and shifted it to rare.

Plus as noted above I wouldn't mind taking some of the new things - Irondrakes and gyrobombers and trying them out.

Yeah that's odd because they're not doing finecast anymore, and I don't think they're doing metal, and they're certainly not doing these characters in plastic.

Rare slot.

Moderately priced; probably in the range where you're not taking units much bigger than 10. Even at 10 models, they're more expensive than most warmachines, even with runes.

They're Longbeard statlines.

They have a special Gromril armor (can't remember the name) that gives them a 3+/6++ and a 2++ against Flaming Attacks.

They have a hand weapon and a Drake Gun (I'm pretty sure that's the name). From memory, it's an 18" range, S5, Armor Piercing, Dwarf Crafted, Flaming Attacks missile weapon.

The unit champion can get a Somethingorother Torpedo: 24" range, S8, Multiple Wound (d3), and I believe that one is Flaming as well.

They can take a runic banner of up to XX points. It's enough points to give them Vanguard, if you really wanted to, for example.

I never saw or doubted your prediction, but I'd hardly call those "stats in the box." It's the same useless stat line that's on the product page of most of the WFB releases on GW's website.

Real stats in the box would have enough reminder text and detail so that you could use it as a quick reference during the actual game. See Warmachine, Malifaux, Dystopian Wars or any of the other games that use reference cards for how to do it right.

At the price for the kit, I'd want a real reference item, not *that*.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

My contribution starts on page 16 of this thread. Pictures are in the seventh post down from the top of the page (I'm technologically illiterate, so I e-mailed them to another Bugman's poster to upload and post for me):

Hey Saldiven, can they really not take any magic items from the BRB?

Nope, not a one. The new book has a BUNCH of runic stuff, though. There are six "Ancestral Heirlooms," which I guess are like the magic items that most army books come with now. I think maybe two of them are particularly good. I really like the banner that allows the unit to re-roll failed to-wound rolls, but it costs a lot of points (as you would probably expect). In addition, the weapon runes cover two pages. Armor, banner, talisman, and engineering runes are a page each. Lots of runes can be taken multiple times for a larger cumulative effect, but they tend to get expensive. I think several of the higher-end multiplied runic banners are good, but they get so expensive that they're BSB only, so you can only take one in an army.

Like the Rune of Slowness:

1 rune: When the unit with the banner is charged, the charging unit subracts 1d6" from charge distance; roll after the charger makes their roll.
2 runes: Same as above, but roll 2d6 and take the highest.
3 runes: Same as above, but if the charging unit still manages to complete the charge, that unit gains the ASL rule until the end of the turn.

That's just one example of one I kind of liked.

Thanks man. This is the kind-of army-wide stuff that I really like - really causes Dwarf armies to be significantly different from other armies.

As an aside, this week was pretty bad for rumor mongers. A lot of folks banked on some bad rumors on Dwarves. You'd think they would learn by now.

I don't know about the single craziest, but there were a ton of bad unit ones. The 'Orc Crusher' was very popular. As was the 'constructs that look like robots from Blackrock Depths'. Sigh. It doesn't give me a lot of hope for Imperial Knights since they all are clearly just bad mongers latching onto bad rumors from other bad mongers and running with them.

Yeah, I hear you about the ol Imperium. Not to detail, but is that the name that they're rumored to have, now? I thought it was Astra Militarum or something like that.

This was the prediction on the cards, though obviously my guess on no books was dead wrong but I did say makes me think on that part of it.

Its a shame they didn't do anything to make the 'stats in the box' thing more useful. I'm totally understanding of them not including points costs and options, but you'd want them to at least include all the special rules associated with the unit, as well as a list of what they're equipped with.

It's entirely possible that this will be "the thing" with units that are released before the army book. It lets you toy around with the point cost that already exists and try out any potential stat changes.

Just spitballing though.

They have - but at $165 listed price for the set, it doesn't seem likely to have a lot in the way of content.

I'm guessing something like:
Longbeards/Hammerer box x2
Dwarf Warriors box
Dwarf Thunderers box
One new character model (that will effectively be "free" - ie the savings of the box)

Which isn't terrible, at a discount. But the old kits will mean existing dwarf players won't benefit, and the character model will prevent any real reason to double up on it.
