Hey gents (and ladies) here's a 4 min bat rep for Sails of Glory. It's quick and hopefully entertaining. Take a look so I'll stay interested. Comments would be appreciated.

Happy New Year!

Hi Doktor G,

This was a really nice video. I particularly like the light classical soundtrack to a brutal sea battle and the cotton wool for smoke effects. Adds to the game a lot when you have the extra visual components.

It seems like the game played very smoothly and historically with the ships going for repeated passes depending on the wind and effects. How easy is it to get into and play? Does the starter box come with the game mat/board as well?

All the best

Pete

Ther are three play levels: basic, standard, and advanced. I've only played basic and standard so far. I think the basic rules are only slightly more complex than XWing Miniatures. Mainly that is because of the record keeping (crew/ship damage and reloading). The maneuvering is based on the wind isn't bad at all. But an experienced captain will take you apart.

Standard rules add only a minor amount of complexity by introducing chain shot and grape shot and limiting maneuvers based on the ships maneuverability (veer). The really cool thing that the standard rules have is that you must choose your maneuvers 2 turns before they are executed. That adds some real cool tactics with the more maneuverable ships. It's just hard to forecast where you want to be two turns ahead. Very cool mechanic IMO.

The starter box comes with everything in the video except the mat. That was a Kickstarter reward. It's smaller than standard anyway. A yard or two of navy blue felt would be just as good. Maybe better.

Thanks for the info.

Perhaps I'll use the mat from Dreadfleet as that's a nice playing surface for ships. It'd look a bit fantasy heavy but who cares :-)
