Ther are three play levels: basic, standard, and advanced. I've only played basic and standard so far. I think the basic rules are only slightly more complex than XWing Miniatures. Mainly that is because of the record keeping (crew/ship damage and reloading). The maneuvering is based on the wind isn't bad at all. But an experienced captain will take you apart.
Standard rules add only a minor amount of complexity by introducing chain shot and grape shot and limiting maneuvers based on the ships maneuverability (veer). The really cool thing that the standard rules have is that you must choose your maneuvers 2 turns before they are executed. That adds some real cool tactics with the more maneuverable ships. It's just hard to forecast where you want to be two turns ahead. Very cool mechanic
IMO.
The starter box comes with everything in the video except the mat. That was a Kickstarter reward. It's smaller than standard anyway. A yard or two of navy blue felt would be just as good. Maybe better.
