So some of you may have seen my old school Ultramarines here on Dakka, Slowly but surely, they're growing into a playable force! I had my buddy come up with his Orks of a similar vintage, and we threw down!

1250
Dawn of War, Crusade

Our armies looked like this:

Ultramarines, 2nd company:
- Captain Sicarius (warlord)
- Chief Librarian Tigurius (Prescience, Dome, Dominate)
- Techmarine with power axe
- Tactical squad with heavy bolter, melta gun, veteran sgt and power fist
- Tactical squad with plasma cannon, flamer
- Scouts x10 with bolt pistols, melta bomb
- Sternguard x5
- Dreadnought with assault cannon, DCCW
- Predator with autocannon, lascannon sponsons

Boss Nazdreg's Bad Moons
- Warboss in mega armor (warlord)
- Big Mek with Shokk Attack Gun
- Mega Armored Nobz x3
- Ardboyz x30, Nob with klaw and bosspole
- Grots x10 (in reserve)
- Lootas x5
- Wartrakk with twin linked rokkit
- Lungbursta (looted wagon with boomgun)
- Deff Dread with DCCWs, KMBs
- Deff Dread with DCCWs, big shootas

There were four objectives, one in each of the big buildings. We rolled for first turn, and I got it. Night fight was in effect, and the Orks failed to seize. Sicarius, Tactical squad 1, and the scouts infiltrated forward onto one objective.
TURN 1
I started by doing some buffs with Tigurius. Unfortunately, as he tried to give Prescience to the Predator, he rolled boxcars and wounded himsefl! I found out later he rerolls failed psychic tests, but ah well. The Predator and Dreadnought together blow up a Deff Dredd, scoring first blood! My plasma cannon on the home objective overheats and kills himself! Sicarius' Tactical squad kills two Lootas. End of the turn looked like this:

The drivers in the Lungbursta make the mistake of pushing the big red button, causing the vehicle to surge forward. Ard Boyz and the Deff Dread move up while the Wartrakk goes around the flank. The Mega Armored Nobz can't move terribly fast and don't really get anywhere. The Lootas shoot at Sicarius' squad, but bounce off their armor. The Shokk Attack Gun scatters onto the Scouts, who pass their 6+ saves granted by night fight! Their armor doesn't hold against the 'Ard Boyz though, who gun down 4 of them. The Boyz fail their charge on the Scouts. End of the turn looked like this:

TURN 2
My Dreadnought immobilizes the remaining Deff Dread, and the Sternguard kill one 'Ard Boy. Sicarius' Tactical squad finish off the Lootas and put a wound on the Big Mek. The scouts make a charge at the Lungbursta and wreck it with krak grenades:

End of the turn looked like this:

The MANz continue to be slow and pick off a Sternguard veteran. Somehow, the Deff Dread gets its legs moving again after I forgot to charge it last turn! The SAG rolls a pair of 2s, which lets me place it where I want, so it ends up sucking 4 'Ard Boyz into the warp. I use the Devastator doctrine as the 'Ard Boyz charge both my Scouts and Dreadnought:

Shooting and hand to hand combined kill 4 Orks in total, but the Orks take the assault phase after wrecking the Dread and killing all but one of the Scouts, who stubbornly refuses to run. End of the turn looked like this:

TURN 3
Tigurius does his typical buffs to the Predator and uses Dominate on the 'Ard Boyz. The Predator manages to stun the newly mobile Deff Dredd, and the rest of my shooting is completely ineffective. The last scout dies, and the 'Ardboyz move closer to me. Uh oh! The Techmarine makes his points back by charging and killing the Wartrakk.

The SAG and Dredd kill 2 Marines from Sicarius' squad, and the 'Ardboyz kill 2 Sternguard before charging in. One Ork dies from overwatch, two die in hand to hand, and my sergeant challenges the Nob. They both whiff, and the rest of the mob kill the remaining Sternguard vet. Morale holds, and I've got another turn of not being able to shoot at these guys ahead of me!

TURN 4
Tigurius fails to cast prescience, but gets off that ineffective Dominate spell on the 'Ardboyz and puts the dome on the Predator, which reunites with the Techmarine and blows up the Deff Dredd. Sicarius' squad finishes off the Big Mek, and the 'Ardboyz finish off the Sternguard before moving in on my home objective and Tigurius! End of the turn looked like this:

The Ork reserves arrive, putting some Grots on their home objective while the MANz hobble their way up onto the other objective. They shoot the Techmarine, but his artificer armor keeps him alive. The 'Ardboyz finally arrive at my home objective, killing 3 with shooting (including the flamer!) before charging in!

Overwatch is as ineffective as ever, and the Orks make their charge. The Nob challenges Tigurius:

Tiggy wins the challenge, but the Marines lose the fight 2-4. Morale holds! I failed to take end of turn pictures from here on out, but I'll give descriptions and add in some extra pictures for the sake of it!

TURN 5
The Predator and Sicarius' Tactical squad shoot the MANz, but don't do anything. Sicarius moves out towards the Orks on the Ultramarine home objective and, using the assault doctrine, makes the charge!

The fight swings in the Ultramarines' favor, as they win the fight 6-0. The Orks stick around, however! This is my last chance to get them off my home objective before the game could end, so there's a lot on the line!

In a crazy turn of events, the Orks manage to kill Tigurius in assault! This is met with two Orks getting cut down by Sicarius and the remaining Marines.

We roll to see if the game ends, and the game continues!

TURN 6
Shooting at the MANz does enough to force a morale check, but they stick around. Assault sees one Ork go down and the Marines stand firm. There aren't many Orks left, but they're still contesting the objective!

Assault continues into the Ork turn, where Sicarius manages to kill one Ork, forcing a morale test which is promptly failed. The Boyz are overrun and the Ultramarines consolidate onto the objective!

We roll to see if the game ends, and it does. End of the game looked like this:

Tallying up the victory points, each side had two objectives. I had first blood, however, securing a narrow Ultramarine victory! Looking back, I need to learn more about Tigurius and how to use him. I know he's a hell of a buff character, but sticking him with a Tac squad and buffing a Predator feels a little underwhelming. If I had half a brain I would've combat squadded so I could have had some mobility in addition to holding the objectives, but hindsight and all that.

They were really fun to make! All the old battle reports had em, and after people mentioned they wanted to see what units were what in my older reports, it seemed like an elegant solution.

Outstanding report. Those models really took me back. Rogue Trader/2nd Edition models excellently painted is a treat to see. Thank you for sharing.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

I made all the map markers and such in Flash, and assembled the whole thing in Photoshop. I basically live and breathe in Adobe programs. Glad you enjoyed the report!

My buddy's a hell of a painter, and he helped inspire me to make this Ultramarine army. He's a great bad influence

Brilliant stuff SRM. Quite inspirational really and I liked how you kept it to 1250 and non overpowered list/units.

I have a few of those old warbikes too, so so small!

Not gonna lie. I didn't really read much of the report. To be fair that was only because I couldn't stop staring at the pics. This was an amazingly nostalgic report! Thanks for sharing and your armies are AWESOME!

LOVED this, it's so cool seeing the old models/paintjobs, they definitely look more cartoony and fun to play with than a lot of the models we have today.

Great battle report and great return to the past! I did a count of my own Bad Moons from the RT/2nd edition days and I have roughly 48 Bad Moon boyz plus nobz etc... I know my own friend has his old Blood Angels from 2nd edition too. You may have very well spurred me to bust them out for a 1k game or so. Great job once again!

Thanks for the kind words, guys! The old models are a lot of fun to play with, even if the metal/plastic hybrid dudes don't stand up on terrain quite as well as plastics do.

And Tonzateef, I really hope you follow through with that! That'd be a really fun report to read.

Great battle report, really close game - models all looked fantastic as well guys!
