So I wanna get into cavalry as the basis of my army. They willl be backed by light vehicles and well thats about it.

With the cavalry, sense says to use them as just more mobile infantry. But has anybidy used them for assaulting purposes and trying to break enemy units from objectives and so on?

Also which early nation is best to use for cav. I want to go japanese but i'll have a lack of light vehicles if I do. But I have cheap artillery to use as pinning tools sticking with the Japs.

Cav isnt popular from my searches but im hoping someone on here has some tips and tricks to reveal as a starting point.

The worst thing about cavalry is the large base size. Makes it hard to get a lot of them in assaults, or to hide them from defensive fire.

EW Polish probably have the best cav. Japanese might be able to do it too. You definitely would want vets imo - conscript cavalry, and to a lesser extend trained, won't do much when you only get one or two bases in the assault.

Jap cav are veteran fearless from memory but they are designed for shooting (thats why they get LMGs). But ill look into polish too.

Yea the large bases never came across my mind. Even more of a reason to have support.

Cheers dude.

They aren't very good in assaults (although if they manage to break the enemy there is a good chance that they will be wiped out). Mounted infantry is the way to go with them really, that is afterall how they were used in the real world for the most part. Cavalry can't shoot at targets greater than 4' away.

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Unfortunately im after some old war glory. People will die but its more for a challenge. Plus it looks good.

So even using vehicles and maybe some light arty to try pin and weaken enemies before charging the objective and dismounting to hold it isnt enough?

You could try Italian. EW you can have one unit and light vehicles - some with flamethrowers if you like. Mid war pdf list is even better...lots of cavalry, including cossacks as recce platoons, plus light tankettes and light spg's too.

Soviet Cossacks could be a cool option too. I've tossed around the idea of painting up a unit of them for quite awhile. You might have to go MW for them though, I'm not sure if there's a current EW list that uses them yet or not.

I was looking at the machine gun horses (chunkas or something) that was drawing me to cossaks, but then the polish had them too which stopped me looking any further. But early war is where I want to stay ideally.
