Here is an updated allies chart I threw together. I changed the order to make more sense to me, but the levels of alliance should be correct. Let me know if you find any mistakes.

Where are Space Marines with Chapter Tactics (Black Templars), who of course, use the Black Templar listing on the Matrix?

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Why did you change the chart so that it looks like every army can ally with itself?

The Black Templars use the Space marines line for the allies relationships. I know the wording in the space marine codex about that is confusing and open to interpretation but I've chosen to go this way because codex inquisition, legion of the damned, and imperial knight do not use a separate relationship for the Black Templars. In my opinion GW has shown its intent very clearly by omitting the Templar line from additions to the chart.
quirthanon wrote:Why did you change the chart so that it looks like every army can ally with itself?
Codex inquisition and Legion of the damned both list themselves as battle brothers. Codex Space marines can ally different chapter tactics as battle brothers. Codex Space Marines, chaos marines, eldar, tyranid, and tau all have supplements that allow themselves to be allied as battle brothers with themselves. I've chosen to continue this trend as it seems logical that any codex that has permission to ally with itself will do so as battle brothers.
It should be noted that the chart itself does not grant permission for codices to take each other as allies, it only shows what level of alliance they will have if said permission is given. The BRB gives us permission to ally any two different codices and as I pointed out there are other sources that allow us to ally a codex with itself.

Yep it does seem that they use the Space Marines Matrix which would be more reflective of the actual current and historic fuff than the messed up original.
Thanks for the chart

So I can add CSM allies to my CSM force as a way to choose 3 HQ choices?
I usually run at least 3 troops choices any way & some times use Kharn + 1 unit of bezerkers with the rest being Death Guard. I suppose this makes more sense in a narrative point of view.

Looks good, the only change I would make is to blank out the intersection of each primary codex (IG/IG, Ork/Ork, etc). The reason the mini-dexes have it shown as how they relate to themselves is because at least in Codex: Legion of the Damned you are allowed to take 2 detachments of them without using double force org but one of those must be your Primary Detachment and the other as the special detachment. Codex: Inquisition and Codex: Imperial Knights don't have this same sentence in their respective "INCLUDING ______ IN YOUR ARMY" section.

The Tau are expansionistic, primarily at the expense of the Imperium, so I think it is mistaken for anyone to see them as more than allies of convenience, other than perhaps the Eldar, as clearly the Tau are not really a threat to a craftworld... but even then I could see clashes with the Swordwind when the Tau encroach on an exodite world.

Nice work. Though one change I'd recommend is adding the key in at the bottom. Makes it easier to interpret it all, and would also be useful for new players who aren't yet familiar with the game. Ha. I chuckled. Mr Morden wrote:Yep it does seem that they use the Space Marines Matrix which would be more reflective of the actual current and historic fuff than the messed up original.
Quite. Now, running an awesome SoB/ BT army is more feasible.

They have their own allies column, since you treat ALL instances of the words Black Templars in the rules as meaning C:SM with BT Chapter Tactics.

They've been left out if three subsequent allies charts. Additionally, that like of text in the Marines codex is highly subjective.

This is really all I see. There's like 5 or 6 armies for which the allies matrix barely exist and the rest are basically "lulz, take whatever you want"

Given its absent from recent publications, in reality the previously separate (and hugely flawed), Matrix for BT seems be gone whatever the nuances of the wording might be
