Hey guys, so I have been cleaning and preparing my new swarm and I got a bit impatient and wanted to paint some models up. I will post some individual shots of the models and then a few group at the end. Also I will include a synopsis of what I did for each and what paints I used. I tried to use different style or techniques mostly experimenting to see what the colors I chose would do where and how applying them would affect the overall feel of it. As a forewarning I love the colors I picked so that wont change but I will take your advice in how to apply them. All models were primed with skull white, for the green parts I used waaagh flesh with moot green layered over it and the tongues I used genestealer purple with pink horror to highlight. Cant forget white scar dry brush on the teeth. Without further ado here is your first candidate!
A) The scheme for this one was inspired by the Japanese Giant Hornet. here's a video of these nasty little guys! www.youtube.com/watch?v=3io8Ys7KSGY
. So I started this one with a watered down tallarn sand on the under parts. I followed that with a watered down ushabti bone and once that dried a wash of seraphim sepia. For the carapace I used imperial primer (it was what I had in my starter kit and it is mostly worthless as a primer... too watery). I laid a base coat of jokaero orange around the edges. I layered troll slayer orange over that leaving some jokaero visible closer to the black. Next I highlighted the troll slayer orange with fire dragon bright. Finally I washed the carapace with fuegan shade. I left the hooves and talons mostly imperial primer, not too great at highlighting those aspects yet but this was my first model I painted in... over a decade.

I'm not entirely show how I am supposed to vote on style A,B, or C when only A is posted. Guess I'll check later but this color seems ok so far.

B) This color scheme was inspired by the hive fleet kraken colors but with more orange off the bat! I started by washing the lower body with the seraphim sepia. I washed the carapace with fuegan shade. I dry brushed the lower body with tallarn sand and ushabti bone and followed it with another light wash of seraphim sepia. For the Carapace I put down a layer of jokaero orange and then a layer of the troll slayer orange. I highlighted the carapace with fire dragon bright. This scheme was really quick to paint but I think that was just because it was much simpler than the first. This was my second model.

C) This one was kind of inspired by a mix of hive fleet kraken and behemoth (pretty much kraken colors inverted heh). I did a fuegan orange to the lower body and I stated with imperial black on the carapace. I layered mournfang brown on top of the black. After I dry brushed tallarn desert and ushabti bone from front to back. Finally I did a minor highlight of ushabti straight from the pot. I finished the underbody of this one much like I did with B, instead of using the tans and I used orange (dry brush of troll slayer and then fire dragon bright for taste with a light wash of fuegan orange over that)!

I'm thinking A, or maybe B - bit more interesting than C, which is pretty standard. Personally I don't like any Tyranid schemes where the armour plates are a different colour; nature doesn't work like that, and I think it looks pretty silly, really; a relic of the good old Ridiculo-nids days -
You know, when they basically looked like caricatures of themselves?
I like to paint mine in a single flowing colour, with shading variation and features picked out and whatnot, as per:
I feel it looks a lot more natural; Tyranids are kinda like dinosaur beetle things, so I looked at crocodiles and bugs and things to see how they are coloured - I challenge you to find me one with differently coloured armour plating!

A or C.
If you like the "bug" look go with A.
If you don't go with C.

Well fine. Maybe the top one. But it looks stupid so it doesn't count.
