What do you guys think about stegadons?? I've talked to some folks and they don't speak well of them. Counter argument?

Well, comparing to other monsters they are worse. I've used them sometimes but most of them they have been proven wrong choice.

They're awesome monster killers. D6+1 D3 wound impact hits! Hell yes. All you need is 2 to successfully wound and you kill the nurgle prince, on average.

Not to mention what they do to Ogres...

Stegadons are essentially chariots for lizardmen and are reasonably priced within the lizardmen army for what they offer.

They do well when ran as pairs and slammed into things, and do poorly when isolated in my experience. Sharp horns is a nice gimmick for MI and monsters they can hurt.

Anything that can easily wound them will also break their armor. You want to aim for s3/s4 infantry or targets they can kill on impact. Stay away from S5 or better, and stubborn Ld6 isn't great.

I like to run the bow steg - keep them cheap and cheerful. Ancients have the extra S, but are more expensive and have a weapon that will never fire outside of S&S.

They are really amazing support units. I find that they often make Saurus blocks worth it. The extra wounds they do really help Saurus overcome their average-ness.

They have a lot of options, between Engines, regular and Ancient; in terms of ranged weapons. And remember that there are TWO Giant Blowpipes for 4D6 shots. I have never had any luck with the Giant Bow. The Engine, on the other hand, is just as great as ever. The two upgrades for either Devastating Charge or D3 wound impact hits are also amazing. I almost always take the Sharpened Horns.

Stegadons are also great as mounts for Skink Characters, being Large Targets boost the Inspiring Presence to 18", which is crazy helpful in more Skink oriented lists.

I don't leave home without my big steg!
Sharpened horns and 4d6 blowpipes can cause a world of pain.
I use a trick by walking between worlds this big monster and either stuff in my opponents face or park the bus and get some poisons darts fired. I field 2 big stegs with tekkoeko and hope for a good vanguard roll then stuff these two down my opponents gob. Some great buffs with heavens and beasts to. Reroll 1s on those poison and add a sprinkle of wyssan for +1S +1T can ruin your opponents day.
Just make sure you take some chameleons or a chief on ripper to clear out them war machines.
Chief on ripper with spear and a few magic items is a real machine hunter.
