Saturday May 3rd, The End Games will be hosting a Warhammer 40K Tournament! For full information and rules take a peek below. Please register by emailing us at omegagamesllc@gmail.com
Registration starts at 10AM with the first round beginning promptly at 11AM. Entry fee is $10 pre-register, $15 at the door. Call (434)-973-2205 or come in to pre-reg.

1850 points
-Warlord powers rolled out of the main rulebook will use one dice. This result can be used on any of the three tables. This roll cannot be switched to use into a codex specific chart.
-Any models using any FW/IA rules MUST contact a T.O. for approval before Thursday before the tournament. Any participants that bring unapproved rules will answer to the discretion of the T.O. the day of the tournament.
-All forces must use their most recent codex, including WD replacements.
-Stronghold and Escalation will be allowed. It’s here, it’s staying, it’s not going anywhere for GW, then we will adapt.

Tournament Specifics
1.) Tabling an opponent will not give an auto-full point win in objective based missions. The game is meant to be fun and complete wiping an opponent does not follow our idea of good sportsmanship. If you do manage to wipe an opponent, kudos but you must still adhere to mission objectives. Missions are meant for a reason and we don’t want people ignoring them. If you can’t grab the objectives needed, then you did not complete your mission. If you table your opponent with turns left, the game will continue as normal for the player left to try to finish missions.

2.) The Grimoire of True Names will ONLY affect the natural Daemon Invulnerable Save. It will not affect invulnerable saves provided by wargear, psychic powers, fortifications, etc. While we did not want to single ANY codex, we feel that the Grimoire unbalances the game too much in favor of a single army. Instead of banning it, we feel that only affecting Daemons unit’s natural invulnerable saves was a good, fair and fluffy compromise.

3.) Proxy/Counts As/Conversions: Anything that is not the specific model sold by Games Workshop will count as one of the above. Rules and and clarifications to follow.

Conversions: Modifying an existing Games Workshop model with other parts, whether to fit a theme or wargear not included in its base box. Any and all conversions must be approved by TO.
Counts as: Using a different, but still similar model instead of the Games Workshop version. Examples include using Forgeworld or Ultraforge Daemons or even as simple as using a Lord of Change as Kairos Fateweaver. Any and all Counts As models must be approved by the TO before the start of the first round.
Proxying: Using an unsuitable model to replace the GW equivalent. Examples include melta guns as plasma guns or vice versa. No proxies will be allowed.

4.) Armies can be compromised of two detachments, your primary and one ally, formation or detachment. Any datasheets will not count towards this limit though if a datasheet were to include a formation, that will count. Example would include Cypher; as he would not count towards your two limit detachment limit but if you decide to use his formation that would.

As for FAQ’s for the NOVA 2013 FAQ will be the one in use and for reference.

Best Tactician will be the player with the most Mission Points at the end of the tournament.
Best Overall will be the player with the most Mission Points, Sportsmanship, and Painting Score.
Best Painted will be the army that is painted the best by PARTICIPANT decisions and voting.
20% of Entry Fees will be given DURING the Tournament of Secret Round Goals Revealed that day! Also based on attendance!

Sportsmanship: All players receive full sportsmanship scores of 10 each match and are assumed to have good sportsmanship scores. A player may file a sportsmanship claim against their opponent, in which the TO will investigate this claim. If he deems the complaint as truly unsportsmanlike, the following consequences will be enforced:

1st Complaint: Verbal warning
2nd Complaint: -5 pts of sportmanship for the round.
3rd Complaint: -10 pts of sportsmanship for the round and -5 pts of sportsmanship for each other round.

Painting:
Unprimed models: 0 pts
Primed Models: 5 pts

This was a really great event the last time, so I will definitely try to make it (barring getting swamped by finals projects).

Is this the only modification, or are you still trying to cut down on the other 2+ re-rolls? Someone in your store really hates Daemons

To clarify from last tournament, Kairos's 4+ CAN be affected by the grimoire.

is painting included with the overall score or is it for a separate prize?

you automatically lose points for using the trite gamer-isms: balanced, meta, Mat Ward, etc.

@ Viewfinder

Painting score is given to help determine a best overall. The best painted is attendee determined. All participants give a secret vote and the player with the most votes wins best painted. If there is a tie, the TO (myself) will cast a vote, though I usually ask responsible people in the store to help me decide; i.e. NOT 9 year old Timmy who wants to make the sweet monster with wings fly

This was a great event last time, and looks to be improving! A couple of quick questions.

For stronghold, are you going to specify dimensions for the void shield generator?

And a note of quick concern, if all of escalation is being allowed, Titans included, I have a feeling some people are going to be upset when a Rev shows up and removes their army in three turns.

Anyway, hope to show and wel see how it goes!

The fact of the matter, is that there is no hiding from Super heavies. To eliminate them would mean any codex not updated with one of their own would be destroyed by Codex: Imperial Knights. Games Workshop has tossed in a puzzle and we have to figure it out. I know there are some crazy ridiculous things out there. The last tournament was too restrictive, this one is pretty wide open. We'll see where this takes us

Then instead of opening up an entire can of worms with every Titan, why not restrict the one? In play test I have found knights to be manageable by most armies. They can only move 6inches through terrain, they can't deny obj only score on them, the huzzah RTT allows them and they haven't even made it to top tables. If anything knights balances the game a bit in the favor of the imperium armies. I just know the idea of the last tournament was to try and bring in a friendly environment while still maintaining a competitive format, I think 1 rev is going to ruin people's games. You guide it, you split fire it, 2 things in the opponents army dies. It moves 36 inches and is str 10 on the charge with hammer of wrath and tank shock. The rest of the list is wide open as well, 4 serpents fit nicely. That would be my exact list lol.

http://www.3plusplus.net/2014/02/guest-article-40k-an-escalation-of-bad-design/

Similar articles are written from other RTT experience. From a competitive standpoint if you want to win bring a Titan if you don't have one then best of luck.

As I said before, super heavies are here. They are gonna be used. We are allowing escalation and stronghold to see what's going on. If people want to put 1/3-1/2 of their points into into one model, thats fine. We want to see both ends of the spectrum. Just come ready to win!

My suggestion is to play for a tie. Given that the rules for the tourney is that you must take objectives, then kill their troops. If someone brings a titan (not knight) then they are going to be under pointed big time. Rush their troops and stick close to them so blast weapons become extra dangerous to the titan player to fire.

Having played two test matches for the tourney this seems to be the best plan of attack. I managed to pop the surer heavy tank in game 1 and probably could have game 2 but had some horrible reserve/deep strike rolls.

In my Eldar list I have 4 durable troops via serpents and a jetbike for farseer. I will cast. 4+ invul on the rev so it will have a 75% chance to ignore your shooting.

Test them out a few times. Escalation homogenizes 40k to a point that isn't worth playing. A prescienced Reverent Titan kills two of just about anything every turn. 40k becomes reduced to "roll to see who wins", as armies are either built to use a Reverent or beat a Reverent.

Here's a great example:

I have a Marine Tau list. It has a Bikemander, Tiggy, 3 Cents, 25 Scouts, a Bastion, Riptide, Buffmander, Skyray, 10 Kroot, and 5 LoTD. By today's standards, that list is relatively tame. It is also instantly unusable in a game with ranged D weapons. Almost anything ground based will feel the boot of the Reverent in similar fashion.

Adepticon had an event that allowed Escalation, and I believe 13 people showed for it. The Escalation book may as well be called "how to lose friends and alienate people." Treat it like the expansion it is and throw in the in closet with things like Planetstrike and Cities of Death. It may be fun to break out for casual games, but it has no place in competitive events.

So I ask, where do I draw the line? Do we allow imperial knights to be the only super heavies? Do forgeworld superheavies have a place? People have these models and want to use them. They are part of the game. I can't make one ruling without cutting out another.

Then why did you draw any lines before? Furthermore, are you not drawing lines by changing the missions? What about your two-source rule? Or the warlord trait modification?

Bottom line--there is no point in being overly dogmatic and believing that you can't make rulings as a TO. You have to. Warhammer 40k is not playable in a competitive sense "out of the box." That isn't a problem, as very few games are.

You have to make choices based on what you think will bring in the most players. If you want my two cents, the line is easy to draw. Ranged D-weapons have no place in 40k. There is no skill whatsoever to taking a Reverent, Eldrad, Baron, and Skyshield. Re-rollable save armies like Seer Council and Beastpack are annoying because they don't die. The Reverent is actually broken because it literally takes two of anything in the game off each turn.

Forgeworld Superheavies and Escalation are expansions to the game. If people want to play Apoc, let them. However, you aren't playing regular 40k at that point. GW has come out and said that Escalation is an expansion as well. Imperial Knights are a codex. As such, you should allow them. I've played 4-5 games with 3+ Knight armies, and I can tell you that they are very beatable. Events like NOVA and BAO have already ruled in the same way.

You have to do what's best for your store. If you think that adding that Apoc-esque nonsense in will bring in players, you should do it. I am just one person, but I don't think that my opinions are out of line with the general community. However, the day that ranged d-weapons become a standard part of 40k is the day I'm out. 40k may not be the most tight, competitive game ever, but it does take skill to win games. Things like the Reverent and Transcendent C'tan are so brainless that it isn't worth the time of anyone who isn't out to throw dice around and make pew-pew noises.

@spaztacus

I was including the Rev's 4+ or 3+ If it did not move which is not counted as a save, stacked with a 4+ invul I only see another Rev with the only capability to kill it. But ya range D allows for no saves of any kind.

BoLs just recently posted an article giving a similar opinion on Escalation, and @Denny I would look in the tournament section and look at Reecius and MVB and their considerations for fun, friendly, competitive play. The top 16 Adepticon Lists thread also has some decent conversation on comp and player attendance, ignoring the trolls that invariably show.

There is no way to make everyone happy in this game, anyone can tell you that. from our last tournament I heard two chief complaints, those about the daemons and those from the daemons. True at our last running we didn't do anything to Eldar and Tau mostly because they are not a problem at our store, do to no one running them. As such we currently have a number of players using super heavies and as such want to play them. Sure other experiences may vary, like JGrand, and if we see that because of the superheavy thing our attendance drops then we will then take actions accordingly. Just do remember that we aren't just doing this things on a whim and that mostly changes you see reflect more our local meta as opposed to the larger metas

I for one have advocated against the use of Lords of War, and am very against them due to Revanents, Ctan, and Ateousraukeras (I know its probably spelled wrong), but we have playtested local SH and no problems have been really had so far. In fact people seem to be having more fun.

You gotta do what you gotta do to please the most people. If you feel that expansion 40k brings in the most players, that is what you should do. However, I will caution you that if you do get a player who knows what he/she is doing with a Reverent/C'tan list, the people having fun with casual and even competitive lists are going feel a level of frustration that is unmatched by anything in non-expansion 40k. Daemons/Seers/Beasts are annoying because they can take a ton of damage and won't die. A Fortuned/Prescienced Reverent sitting on a Skyshield is simply broken, as it just picks two units a turn to take off the board.

If you all do decide to keep them, I would strongly consider either a ban list based on anything with ranged d-weapons or some kind of house rule to make d-weapons something like st 10 ap 1 ignores cover and forces a re-roll of successful invulnerable saves. It is probably still too powerful, but at least it isn't game-breaking.

I honestly hope you're right JGrand. I do hope this will wake up, so to speak, our local and enlighten these people that yes some supers are fine, but there are notable exceptions that just shouldn't be here. I do like this ban-list idea, works for MTG so why not 40K lol, so I'll see if we can try something like that in the future.

I think it is worth those in charge of the event proxying out something like the following list before the tourney.

Eldrad
20 Guardians w 2x Bright Lances
4x3 Windrider Jetbikes
Reverent
5 Swooping Hawks

Baron
5 DE Warriors

Skyshield

That list is admittedly based on the Reverent doing damage, but Eldrad gives the player a great chance to have a Fortuned Reverent throwing out four twin-linked d-blasts a turn. The Guardians can bubble wrap to stop any chance of melta-based alpha strikes, and the Baron gives the player an increased chance of going first in Reverent v. Reverent fights. All of the super fast scoring takes objectives (especially in the ATC format). Essentially, it is a mindless list that invalidates 90%+ of the current builds in 40k.

Bottom line--Escalation is an expansion for casual play. If everyone shows up to roll dice and have a few laughs with non-optimized Reverent/C'tan nonsense, it will be a good time. However, that may be wishful thinking. Hoping that people don't bring something like this list is not an acceptable answer to the problem that the Escalation expansion creates. But hey, at least those games will be fast

Again I am not disagreeing with you. This list, and those like it are 100% of the reason I hate escalation rules. It is however too late in the run to change this tournament's format. We're roughly two weeks away, To change it now would be a terrible decision on our part. Now our next I promise will be different. Feedback during this event combined with more trial and error, maybe even a new edition should rumors prove true, will force a different style that I promise you.
