So i'm considering collecting a blood angels dreadnought army. As i understand it, they can take dreadnoughts everywhere but fast attack and HQ slots. Would this be an especially bad idea? I'm not looking for anything that will win tournaments, but i don't want to lose every game i'll ever play. (my other army is dark angels deathwing, lol) I know i've heard that dreadnoughts are terrible now, though i'm not especially sure why as this is the first edition i've played. (i can see that compared to MC's, they are, but on their own, are they bad?) In addition, i was also interested in clan raukaan and orks for killa kans and deff dreads.
but death company dreads and furioso's especially seem interesting to me. the blood talon thing just sounds amazing to me.
what do you guys think?

Dreadnoughts are one of the coolest concepts conceived of fluff wise.
The models are pretty cool too, but....
Like you have heard, Dreads are hard to use in 6th, the only way I seem to get any use out of the thing is suiciding it in a drop pod and TL MM into the rear of some big tank, but other then that.
We do have a BA player who always runs a Librarian Dread in every game he has played, its been 4 games and it has been killed in the first 2 turns every time, it also has no kills to its name.
This is not me putting you off the ides, it would be pretty cool seeing an army of Dreads on the board, but be careful with 6th.
Hope this helped.

I LOVE dred armies.
They are not as effective as they once were, but a ton of fun.
Just a note - the furioso and his blood talon thing is indeed awesome....it can also really annoy some armies that don't have a lot of invul saves.
not saying dont run them, but I would not run a ton of them...

I'd stay away from DC dreads until you're out of other slots. But the other dreads are fun.

I run a dread army with my marines as Iron Hands with a MOTF as HQ. All the dreads are fire support though. They're either rifle dreads or TL LasC dreads with missile launchers. Armor saturation helps a lot and keeping them out of CC helps as well. Focus their firepower on the appropriate targets and kill the enemy's big guns ASAP.
Are you going to win tournaments? No. Are you going to win some games? Yes. Are you going to have fun? Yes.
(With allies you can fit a lot of dreads.)

I run walkers, because I love them, but they do seem to have a limited impact.

If you want a dread army with BA then drop pods are the way forward, you're assault marines effectively get them for free and they're a sure way of deploying the dreads in the centre of battle. Use the heavy support ones as gunners, and then the elite ones for combat. Blood talons are awesome, but so are the librarian ones, especially when you use wings to make them jump and shield to give your troops a cover save.

Kanz are still usable for orkses. Grotzookas are fun! Though, heavy support is usually so crowded. For marching across the field - ork walkers are best you can get if there's a KFF mek around. They're the cheapest and can come in masses. That won't help vs some strong mid-str shooty armies and FMC...and deathstars...and killy HQ...and flyers... However, vs fun fluffy lists without much anti-tank weapons and uber-characters they'll be good.
Dreads that are still good are Ironclads in droppods with double heavy flamers for clearing out infantry. GK rifledreads are good shooty support cause they rock s8 TL autocannons. Automatically Appended Next Post: Well, and eldar walkers just cause they've got rediculous firepower, invul, can move-shoot-run and are in the most op army atm. But i'd not call them dreads.

If you are going fluff based and for the fun then my advice is do it!
The odd game with some lucky rolls it will work, come up against even a semi competitive list and prepare to die!
I play a lot of scouts in my army (usually 4 full squads even in 1k games) as it suits my fluff and I adore the models. It is in no way a comp list but I have a lot of fun with it.
