Hey guys any tips or tutorials on how to paint white Non-Metallic Metal? Trying to think of a good way to make a pure white armor for Elves, adorned with gold, and NMM came to mind, although I have not tried it before.

like this do you mean?
it's not exactly NMM, but it does give a white armour. I guess it depends on what mood you want - what base colour you use will be your shadows, and will help communicate what you want. You can see the the blue base makes things a lot cooler and colder, but a warm grey is really quite soft.
I just use my usual method - even basecoat and then lots and lots of thin layers to build up the highlight colour. White is a pain only in that it takes AGES to build up a nice smooth finish.

That is simply gorgeous!! So crisp and clean but without looking flat like a lot of white minis. Do you feel like posting a tutorial on how you acheived it? It would be much appreciated.

thank you : )

Pretty easy really... if you have lots of patience! lol

For Irillyth, I basecoated white, and then did a wash of 1:1 of Waywatcher Green:Guilliman Blue. Then it was straight in with Ceramite White... to be honest, there's not much difference between Skull White and Ceramite for this, I just prefer Ceramite, despite its tendency to separate out when watered down. I always water down my paints, but for this, I water them down A LOT. You want the paint THIN here, so that when you lay it down with the brush, it builds up the pigment, but slowly so that you avoid any harsh lines. I use a fairly small brush, and don't overload the brush and just go slowly and carefully. It does take time to build up the layers, but not as long as you might think.
For his ribbons/loincloths I basecoated with Baharroth Blue and again highlighted up with white - the different blues give a slightly different look.
I just avoided painting over the areas that I wanted to keep as shadow, and blended out towards the edges.

With the basic Spectre, I basecoated with (I think, it was a long time ago that I did it) with Dheneb Stone, so that I have a warm base shade to work up from.

One of the potential problems with working up to white is knowing when you're actually there! What might look like white might actually be a couple of shades below, so it might pay to over highlight just in case.

I think it helps a lot to have a basecoat that isn't too dark - I've done white armour from a black/grey wash, and it was much more work because it was that much darker. Not impossible, but there's only so much highlighting in one colour that I can take before my attention span begins to wander ; )

I think that's it really! : )

This is actually awesome! I will try to replicate your technique (to the best of my abilities ) although I am certain it will take me a lot to reach that level of coolness. Thank you finnan!

NMM is a painting technique that tries to capture the effects of reflections on a highly polished steel or gold surface. Doing a NMM white would be like trying to capture the effects of reflections on a highly polished white surface. Because a polished white surface is not going to reflect as much light as a polished metal surface, the effects of NMM paint job would be toned down/softer compared a NMM metal surface. Would be interesting to see a very skilled painter attempt it...

NMM is the techniques of using non metallic paint layered in a way that looks reflective. You could do the technique with light or near white colours, but zit would n't have the contrast that NMM needs to work.
