GW has definitely changed the policy for releasing stuff.
I remember the time when Dakka was a small and unrecognized board,
while Eldar players were posting at EldarOnline (renamed later to 40kOnline).
We players there wanted a Harlie codex, but not that one written by Gav Thorne.
The fun 'dexes there were much better.

You dug-up a two week old thread only to commment on the fact that they misspelled the title, then you misuse the word "there" in your post? Are you and Mr. Kettle associates or have you only recently met?

EDIT: whoops, didn't know this was pseudo-necro.

Hardly, the new stuff is good quality and gives people more options. Sure, I would like a steady date, but atm, just be patient and don't buy something unless you truley do want to start up. And beyond that, no one says you need the model when its new. I'm waiting a bit before starting skitarii because I wanna see where they are taking this.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

I like the release schedule. Plenty for everyone. Pick your poison and buy it! Spend baby, spend!

Eventually they will hit market burn out, people cant paint fast enough to actually get models on the table. The only way you can keep up is either spending an insane amount of money or finding deals at every corner.

AppleID sharing all the way. 90% off all digital books.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

You dont have to buy everything. The more releases means the more options. How is more options a bad thing?

Too much choice can be overwhelming, a bad thing as it leads to indecisiveness and can negatively impact your sales.

Yeah, if true, that makes sense from GW's perspective, though as a consumer, I just still plod along buying what ever I feel like, there is no pressure on me to buy anything!

Put yourself in the position of someone new to 40K with no depth of knowledge WRT the game or the universe though.

It's one thing for me, a grown ass man who will be celebrating his silver 40K anniversary this year to look at a bunch of stuff and go "I like that, I like that, that looks awesome but it's gak in the game so I'll never use it, I don't like that." Quite another for a wide eyed 12 year old who hasn't even settled on an army yet!

I want to be able to paint and use the stuff I buy before I go to buy more stuff. At the current pace, I feel like by the time I get my force bought, assembled, and painted there will be a new codex out/ruleset out.

Plus, there is no time to build excitement about anything when the company are constantly runnimg to the new shiny.

Finally, it just reeks of desperation and cheap corporate sales tactics. Does GW really need more of that in the community?

These maybe a "me" problem, but that makes it a GW problem if I'm not buying anything from them.

the high rate of rules releases mean that within a year almost all codex have been updated. I was annoyed at the rush to 7th within 2 years of 6th but i'm loving the psychic phase as it ended up and tactical objectives despite all the tactical misery they have caused, have definitely shaken up the game playing experience.
With Eldar craftworlds on the way and potentially DA and SoB thats gonna mean pretty much all armies updated within 18months and new armies to boot!

Thats good in my book and if this doesn't improve next years GW financials then we can safely say the GW end times book is writing itself but i'm confident this is a push to sell more product and boost falling financials.

could this mean a switch to 2 yealry rules edition updates? I hope so. Please give us an edition that strengthens HTH rather than this overly shooty meta

You hope so? You WANT to have all your pricey rulebooks invalidated and be forced to buy new ones (not to mention even more miniatures to replace those that become sub-par), every two years?!

Answered yes.

New releases are good, but when the overall quality of the products diminish, then it is a problem.

Judging from the wide range of rules, balance and typo issues, as well as the copy paste method of creating 'new' codicies alongside the range of mini codices charged at full price like harlequins or tempestus, I believe that more time spent developing and testing would be an improvement over the current state of affairs.

My problem is the surge toward new, uncharted territory. How about we update all the codexes, 3rd ed sculpts that are still around, and armies that have almost been forgotten?

The game is all about hype which leads to sales, but I just don't care anymore. I'm in it to have a tight ruleset with a myriad of options that are all viable.

Save to say, I've abandoned most everything official and have spent my time developing new games with existing models (narrative Necromunda campaigns for 3 players with factions that have never existed, etc.).

I agree with you a bit.. but I think the copy paste laziness would still occur with slow release schedules.

Yes and no. If the new releases start to lose quality and look like gak, then yes they need to slow down and work on the CAD some more. If everything they release looks good then don't stop.

As of now, if I vote yes its because the Taurox and the Dunecrawler look terrible. I hate the pose on the Ruststalkers and the little driver thing on the Ironstrider in the front looks stupid. All of this is just my opinion.

However the Harlequin look fantastic. Give me models like these every week and I vote no.

Where has the quality been sacrificed? Legitimate question, as I've been following less. Everything I've seen lately from Harlequins to these Skittari look fantastic......

SW flyers were a joke, the new IG stuff ranged from mediocre to "how the did that get approved", and even the new admech stuff is kind of underwhelming for an army that people have been anticipating for decades. They've had some decent infantry models to get excited about but overall quality has been inconsistent IMO. It really feels like they aren't spending enough time refining their designs and only releasing the best stuff.

The same can be said for any company, but quality is a subjective thing.

Looky Likey

I own multiple variants of the majority of 40k armies, my smallest army is 3k and my largest army is over 20k, so I have been a big customer of GW over the years.

With the previous slower release cycle I used to buy the codex and all of the new/changed models as I knew I could get a few months play out of them before the next latest and greatest shiny thing distracted me.

With the current faster release I might buy the new codex and I'll only buy the stellar new models as it'll be a month at most before the next new shiny comes out. I would have brought harlies, but skitari distracted me, would have brough skitari but eldar distracted me, etc.

While I have a good sized monthly hobby budget I've ended up spending it on FW instead as FW also seem to have speeded up their release schedule in the last year or so. So GW are still getting my hobby money, just not on the plastics.

I'm guessing here, but I think GW realised that the majority of products associated with a codex release have a short tail, i.e., they only sell in volume for a short period of time, and that their release schedule was long tail focused, so they switched to a shorter release schedule to improve turn over. I guessing again, but I think the change to the schedule will have shortened the tail even further.

If there is only thing that I really do not like with the current approach is the lack of reuse of kits in new factions. There is no reason not to have allowed the Harlies access to falcons and WS, no reason to not allow Skitari access to Rhinos and LRs. I know it is perfectly possible to allie in to obtain this but its not as neat damn it and I'm sure its having an impact on sales of existing kit as allies are an issue for some play groups.

Yes, I think GW is pushing to hard and to fast. They are doing exactly what The Allies *Cough* Patton *Cough* did after the invasion of France. They are pushing too far, too hard and too fast eventually they will run out of fuel and/or make fatal mistakes. We are already beginning to see this with the new codices and the fact that they are throwing whole new armies into the game.(Don't get me wrong the mechanicum has needed a codex/army for a while but Sisters need it more!
