Never mistake an Irishman for an Englishman. The result is often... unpleasant.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Excerpt from "Seeress of Kell", Book Five of The Malloreon series by David Eddings.

It might surprise me but I doubt it ( given BF's form with Fate of a Nation) that I'll find any pleasure in this.

Twilight 2000. It wasn't really a Red Dawn setting, though. The players were members of the US military stranded in Western Europe after everything collapsed due to flying nukes and mutual exhaustion. My understanding was that the bad guys tended to be warlords and the like that had sprung up to fill the gaps created by the collapse of the European governments.

Someone tried to revive it not long ago. The setting timeline was moved forward a bit with a still collapsed US, and a revived Russia that was pulling off things that even the Soviet Union at its height would have found difficult. I rolled my eyes quite a bit while reading through the setting info in the book.

I loved that game. I think I ran that game for about 5 years. I have tried to restart it a few times, but...the setting got...old? It just does not have the same punch after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Yes I know. Bad sentence structure on my part makes my original post ambiguous. There were (at least) two WWIII games Twilight 2000 and another game that was more like Red Dawn.

Funny enough I was just coming here to ask if anyone else wanted a cold war minatures game from Flames of war and low and behold seems they're doing it already.

Now what I really want to know is are they going to push the boat out and allow a possible future scenario where we get to use some real and possible some blueprint only prototype tanks and planes like the Object 279 nuclear withstandinator tank or the Chrysler TV-1, or maybe even the outlandish TV8. For planes I'd like to see the B52 "Strato Fortress" bomber and the weird Ekranoplan.

The idea of a made up ww3 scenario is such a cool one because with nuclear power been a thing it seemed most weapon concepts were pushing the world towards Fallout tech style before the cold war ended.

Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
and the ends of the earth your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel. Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son,
lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

I suspect that they'll have enough on their plate just adapting real-life technologies without adapting stuff that never existed. Even some of the best-known Cold War stuff won't turn up due to the arbitrary 1985 date that Battlefront has indicated. The Apache, for instance, entered service in 1986, and Battlefront has stated that because of this it won't appear in Team Yankee.

As for the B-52 - while it exists in the real world, it's not really appropriate for a company-level game like Flames of War. iirc, A-10s have been confirmed, and they'll probably use the new loiter rules introduced in Brown Water Navy. But something like the B-52 or Tu-22m wouldn't be dropping bombs on the front lines.

From what I've read of the A-10, it's a tough motherfether.

Will there be anything in the game to be able to shoot one down?

The Soviets had a LOT of ADA, both missile and gun type systems that were pushed down to pretty low echelons in large quantities.

Which actually brings up another point. CAS at that time was not the precision delivery system we take it for today. Additionally, fixed wing was a Deep Strike asset, not a lot of sorties were going to be allocated to CAS. What you faced hopefully would have been attritted by deep strikes, but CAS was going to be rare for the troops in contact. Especially at the echelons players are in for this game (company/team commanders up to maybe BN/TF commanders).

Yup... Those A10s would be dumping loads on rear echelon stuff.

I was doing some research recently on NATO air plans for an all out war and surprisingly little was directed to CAS, really just helicopters.

It was thought that virtually all the fixed wing air assets would be expended on air superiority, interdiction/escort and hitting rear areas to breakdown supply lines.

The expected longevity of the campaign was rather sobering... Some pointed to a max of two weeks before both sides literally wiped out each others air power to a point where air support would be drastically limited. Some thought that two weeks was very optomistic...

Yeah the A-10 as a CAS platform is something that has really only come about in the past decade+. During the Cold War and into the 90s it was firmly considered an attack platform designed to engage enemy columns and formations before they could make contact with friendly ground forces.

And yes, the Soviets and WARPAC had access to a lot of ADA assets at a very low organizational level. Biryusas, Afghanskis, Tunguskas, etc. for SPAAGs and the Iglas, Strelas, and Buks for missiles.

I got a gut they will nerf this up too, Sorry but since this digital stuff came out i feel that BF has gotten lazy. But dont burn me at the stake for saying that digital is the blame ,i am all for digital it seems to me that they are throwing everything on digital and are half arseing anything on print,
I guess i am bitter about the no more hardbacks,it was one of the main factors that helped get me into fow and also i own everyone of them and iam upset that we wont be seeing a Ardennnes, VArsity and a fall of berlin HB comp books and i was really looking forward to them.

I agree. Barbarossa is an awful fudge of a book and the digital stuff for Soviets is comedy lazy.

This looks interesting. I'd be willing to give it a shot. I hope they take the time to tweak the standard FOW ruleset for improvements and streamlining. It has good bones, but it always feels just a bit clunky.
