I got my Apaches from Amazon...

My other vehicles were from QRF, Peter Pig, Khurasan and some other smaller companies. Old Glory/Skytrex has some as well, Quality Castings had some.

The Soviet starter has been delayed again. There hasn't been an official announcement, but word through the back channels is that they were still having problems with the T-72s.

The good news is that the rulebook and the US starter should be arriving in stores throughout the week. I've already purchased mine from my local store.

Well, looks like WW3 is a bit one sided then, sort of "what if you called a war and nobody showed".

Guessing the air turned blue in NZ for a while, not BFs fault but they will be the ones who are blamed.

Meanwhile, I have more 1/285 GHQ stuff on order..

I like the idea of a Cold War game, but I just can't get over "Potecknov". What the hell is that supposed to be for kind of name?

It's the name of a Russian officer in the book. No idea where the author got it from, though.

Have my Soviets, had a very quick demo game, this seems very fast and utterly brutal. Can see it becoming pretty popular though.

Can see my Commander, N. Blokov (Nokya, known to his men as 'ringtone', though he doesn't understand why) having some fun.

Perhaps would have been better to have the 'launch event' a week after the models came out though, give the places a chance to get a bit of paint on them.

That said the map BF produced works nicely

Yеаh I know, but it does not sound like a Russian name at all.

So far as I can tell, it isn't. I did a quick search for the name on Facebook, and came up with nothing. Even an uncommon name ought to have a couple of listings.

I suspect that they wanted to make sure that there was a little excitement going while there was still time before Christmas.

Yes, as a native Russian speaker I can tell you Потецкнов is just gibberish It would be like if the American officer was called Petnxgson or something like that. Hilarious.
Not that it matters. I much prefer making my own backstories for my units anyways.

On that note, does anyone know what other factions Battlefront is going to release for this game? I would love to see Germans vs Germans. So much dramatic potential...

Battlefront has stated that the next book will be BAOR and Germany.

Few at my club are waiting for the BOAR book before going into this, not fancying the Soviets or the Americans so are waiting, hoping it takes off enough.

The lure of the Chieftain tanks is strong in some of them.

That said one of the ski-fi game nuts who hates WW2 bought the American box, his justification.. "the tanks have lasers so its ok", hey a player is a player

Heh. Nice.

I've played a bit. The basic tank on tank seems good, though at 50 points the M1 platoons are *very* fragile. I'll have to see if they get better at higher points levels with larger platoons. Also, the Vulcan is completely inadequate as the company AA unit. While the Shilka is slightly worse, the Soviets have additional options, adding (inexpensive) layers of redundancy to their air defence.

Finally, something troubling has been noted over on the official forums. If an Abrams assaults a Soviet infantry company, the only chance that the Soviets have of actually hurting the tank is if one of the RPG-7 teams scores a 1 in 36 bail out (need a 6 for the team to hit in the assault, and then the M1 has to roll a 1 for its armor check). An American infantry platoon assaulted by a T-72 company is in even *worse* shape, as they don't have a weapon that can hurt a T-72 in an assault. Since my understanding is that modern-day tankers see unsupported assaults into infantry positions as reckless (if not suicidal), I'm wondering what BF was thinking when it decided to handle assaults in this fashion.

And yes, this way of handling assaults appears to be intentional. One of the example illustrations even involves an RPG-7 against an Abrams.

Couple of points of note on the models.

The T-72 is very nice, a couple of fiddly bits but if you get the assembly order right it falls together.

The Hind is a shame though, the landing gear won't last long, neither will the rotors which were more or less pre-broken here, they are far too fragile to last (clear plastic disc would have been better and looked better anyway - its what mine will get soon as I can do it). Also a few bits on the landing gear main cover that doesn't seem to fit right. its salvageable but a shame

The Soviet starter, M901/M163 kit, and the M113/M106 kit are now arriving in stores. Your local store should have them by early next week at the latest.

Unfortunately, the BMP kit, which was scheduled to arrive at the same time, had a slight delay. What I'm hearing currently is that stores will start to receive them early next week. This no doubt means that some stores (i.e. the stores that tend to take a couple of days longer to receive their product) won't get them until after Christmas.

Team Yankee Field Manual 101 - FAQ
Note that about half of the document is a primer on the differences between Flames of War and Team Yankee.

From the FAQ -

Using weapons like the M72
LAW, RPG-7, and RPG-18 can be very effective against lighter
vehicles like the M113 or BMP, but have limited effect against
main battle tanks like the M1 Abrams or T-72.

Someone on the official forums compared the last part of that sentence to the infamous "There are no American troops on Iraqi soil!" statement. "Limited effect" is an understatement, in this instance.

I thought about those Khurasan motor guys but they just look too much like my ww2 soviets. I'd feel like I was just painting the same thing. So i'm gonna go with Peter Pig Russians in berets....Should this be sufficient for paras?

I've been using Thunderbolts to proxy for Thunderbolts.

(P-47s for A-10s, in this case)

Played a few games. Starting to get a feel for the rules. One of the bigger problems so far has been the stuff that's not quite like Flames of War. But I'm quickly managing to pick out the changes.

Picked up the rulebook and American starter yesterday. Pretty happy now that I've started digging into it. Debating whether to pick up the Soviets or not though. Has anyone compared the BF T-72 to the Zvezda T-72 yet? Debating whether to forgo the Soviet starter and just picking up a bunch of the Zvezda plastic if they're fairly comparable. Have some of the Zvezda Hinds and they aren't half bad.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Nevermind. Found the BF T-72 assembly video on Youtube and see that it's a T-72A vs the T-72B from Zvezda, so kinda apples to oranges comparison.
