True, but only a tiny proportion of their range, and at a cheaper set that's still not actually that cheap.

Out of interest how much do you think an average infantry model should cost? I ask because GW goes a low as about 85p a model in some sets and as expensive as £20+ (for a character).

I play a lot of historics/generic fantasy, so I'm used to paying*...

in bulk (i.e. 40 man boxes): 50p plastic / £1 metal
less bulk (i.e. 10 man boxes): £1 plastic / £2 metal
Individuals: normally around the £5 mark for metal, maybe going as high as £10.

I find some GW models too expensive and so don't buy them, but I find most of the range acceptably priced. I get a lot of painting enjoyment out of my miniatures which maybe makes it seem like money better spent.

That's my stance as well, which is why I've spent £0 on GW stuff this year, and about £500 on non-GW stuff to paint. I like a lot of the GW stuff but when I compare it to my other purchases, I just can't.

*That's almost always from companies that don't do their own moulds / casting in-house, so don't have the same economies of scale as GW does.

People accept that FW has premium prices, but you'll find that in Citadel ranges too whilst others are much more affordable.

People accept that FW has premium prices, because it's an obscure, hand-cast boutique range. Even then, there are examples where FW mini's are cheaper than Citadel plastics (even in the UK).

The discount boxes certainly seem to be a way to offer deals without reducing prices, and they have done some price experiments, but since the price of each new release almost invariably goes up, it's a bit disingenuous to say they are actually improving there.

That said, unless Blood Bowl is crazy expensive, I have to admit to being tempted by it.

Yep, the ceiling for a lot of people seems to hover at around $250 for an entire force I've observed. GW games you can't really do that.

For me, even though I've dropped wads of cash on GW lately, a starting size army should be around $100-150; I don't mean the bare minimum to play little more than demo game (GW Start Collecting kits), I mean like 1000 point equivalent. A normal (re: "tournament") size army, barring special things like Warmachine having two lists, should be around $250-300. Basically if one wanted to assemble a solid army for gaming at the normal points level that people play the maximum spent should be about $300, more of course if they want a larger collection to pull from

Yeah, I "started collecting" Deathwatch.
Look at the bill for this (pricing as of 2016/09/06):

Codex: Deathwatch $50 ($60)
Deathwatch Watch Master $25 ($30)
Deathwatch Librarian in Terminator Armour $30 ($35)
Deathwatch Terminators $50 ($60) x2 = $100 ($120)
Deathwatch Kill Team $35 ($43)x3 = $105 ($129)
Kill Team Cassius $65 ($80)
Deathwatch Bikers $60 ($70)
Corvus Blackstar $65 ($80)

Total:
$500 (On the nose American... wow, I did not expect that... oh yeah: plus tax)
$604 Canadian
Nevermind a few drop pods, Rhino and landraider are getting pulled from my "warehouse" to fill in the rest.
Oh yeah, picked this up on sale: Start Collecting! Space Marines $85 (Yikes! $100 on Canada prices)

So it is a bit extreme in cost that is for sure, it at least shows that the "start collecting" bundles are a great help for the pocket book so I will not grumble too hard in that direction.
You buy two of those kits and it falls within the pricing you outlined for a reasonable force.

I remember during the hallowed time of 3rd/6th that there were boxed army deals that came with an army book and roughly 1500 pts of minis, INCLUDING a ltd. ed. model (BSBs for WFB) and they were from $175-250. So given inflation $250-300 isn't a stretch.

For 4-6th WFB, 2-5th 40k, and similar timeframe gaming

Looking for dice from the new AOS boxed set and Dark Imperium on the cheap. Let me know if you can help.
