Hi, got some Vostroyan's in the mail today (two were missing from the squad :() but I painted some of what I did have up, they didn't take me very long to do, and i'm quite happy with them anyway here are some pics attached. any feedback? for some reason i've always put off buying the Vostroyans, I remember loving how they looked when they were first featured in WD, when I was like 10-12 only just got them today haha!

I like your paintjob. The guy's lasgun looks kind of droopy, though. Is the gun frame intentionally sloped?

Yea, most all of my Vostroyans had slightly bent or droopy lasguns when I got them. It's not a bad fix, generally speaking. Just takes a little time and effort (and strong fingers) to bend the metal back and make them straight.

Good looking Vostroyans also there Henry, nice to see a fellow Vostroyan player out there.

Keep up the great work and if you need a hand or want advice regarding painting, please feel free to drop me a PM. I've painted about 70 Vostroyan infantry and am currently working on painting up tanks and aircraft now. (as well as working on a small deathwatch killteam force to ally with my Guard.)

Looking forward to seeing more of your minis!

Take it easy for now.

Hey, thanks for your kind words

Overall I found them quite a nice thing to paint, all colours I am familiar doing however I am wondering how to do vehicles when the time comes, do you have any examples?

No worries Henry, and yea I have several WIP and finished examples in my Gallery, but here's a few pictures linked from there. Apologies in advance for the poor picture quality.

I use a very simple method for painting the tanks: Karak Stone airbrush over a black basecoat, then one or two good thin layers of Karak Stone over the top of the airbrush layer to even it out. After that, I hit the areas that are to be Bronze with a layer of Baylor Brown, then follow that up with a layer of Hashnut copper. After that, I hit all the silver/gunmetal areas with a coat of Leadbelcher, and finally the red areas I use the old Foundation Mechrite Red (but Khorne Red base will also work well). After that, I use black ink and/or Flesh Wash (old ink color) to weather the metal bits, and also use the Flesh Wash to darken around the rivets and make them look weathered. Then apply decals, paint around the edges of the decals to help them blend in with the tank, and finally I hit the entire thing with a Seraphim Sepia wash to help tie everything together. It's simple, and produces good consistent results. Weathering is accomplished by using a dark brown base, then using Leadbelcher over the top with a brighter silver (chainmail or the old mithril silver) for 'newer' chips and dings in the paint. Hopefully that helps ya out in the near future.

Lastly, here's a couple of my recently completed infantrymen.

Very close to yours all told.

Thanks again for sharing your Vostroyans, I'm looking forward to seeing more of them in the future!

Take it easy for now.

Nice looking tanks! I really like the dark brown/copper edging, really makes the light brown pop! will certainly use it I have a basilisk coming sooon that I got nice and cheap off Ebay, I think it really suits the theme of the army.

Additionally, here are my 3 painted Vostroyans in a bunker.

The Bunker was scratch built from blue foam

Nice! Good stuff Henry! It was the standard 10 model box, yes? (Sergeant w/ a laspistol, Heavy Bolter team, a Flamer, and six lasgunners).

Looking forward to seeing more of your army painted man. Not to show off, or try and derail your thread, but here's something I hope will inspire you to keep painting and get all of your army painted up.

Keep at it, and looking forward to seeing more of your work!

hopefully get the next squad done soon! i'm still figuring out best how to highlight the biege areas on it, I've got the red cracked though

think i'm going to chop the head off of my spare bolter loader, and stick it on one of my snipers when they get here, although the moustaches are good I much prefer the respirators.

I think i'll take a leaf from your army and put in more gold...and more importantly different coloured hats!

Good deal, and yea throwing a little variety into the hats goes a long way (even if you use them as squad indicators, black hats are one squad/platoon, beige hats are another, etc).

As for the armor/gold I use a very simple method that produces good results I think (for tabletop standard) using GW brand paints. I start by laying down a coat of Baylor Brown over the black basecoat on all areas that are to be leather, wood, or bronze. I then use a dark brown wash over the leather areas to darken them down and give them a leather look (I personally use the old GW Flesh Wash shade, which is out of production sadly, but you can find similar shades/inks out there thankfully). After that, I use a Seraphim Sepia wash over the other areas that are going to be non-metalic (Gun stocks, etc). Lastly, I use one to two thin coats of Hashnut Copper over the armored sections and metalic parts on the rifles, plus respirators. I can say I love this particular color. Hashnut copper is fantastic for coverage, especially when you paint it over the Baylor Brown shade. Gives the Copper a more bronze look as you can see in the pictures of my army. The last two steps are Leadbelcher metallic paint on hoses and other detail sections that need a dab of the gunmetal color, and finally I hit the entire miniature with a nice Seraphim Sepia wash once again (Metalic and woodgrain/leather areas included). The red areas are done using the old Mechanicum Red foundation paint with some inking to help with shading. The above technique produces armor effects that looks like this:

and

I hope that helps, and best of luck with the tank, really looking forward to seeing it.

Take it easy for now Henry.

For you Vostroyan playes(builders/painters I have a few questions, how are the models to assembel? Is a lot of pining requierd? or what sot of metod did you use to assembeld them?
Oh and stunningly nice work both of you

That's the beauty of vostroyans models, almost all of them, with very few exceptions, are one piece models. It's insert model into slotted base and glue. Then apply basing and base coat.

The only models that require assembly are:
Commander
Voxcaster
Snipers (both)
Standard bearer
Heavy bolter team
Lascannon team
Mortar team

That's it, all of them assemble easily and shouldn't require pinning, but can be pinned fairly easily if you desire. The only one that would be troublesome to pin would be the standard bearer's sword into his hand, but good glue has held mine in place for years without incident or breaking off ever since I glued it together. All the above multi part models are easy to assemble too.

Thanks for the complement also. . I hope that answered your question.

Take it easy,

they're good fun to paint too

I found that quite a lot of prep work was needed to slot them into the base, I simply shaved the slot out, to make it bigger...other than that it was fine.

I say it that way because of the poor lighting.
