Out of my Mind

So, I've always wanted to do an 'Adeptus Mechanicus' army, and everytime a new Codex comes out, I've taken a moment to look see if I can do one. Well after having a peek at the new Ork dex and reading the rules, I came up with this rough list for 1750.

I present to you the 'Waagh! Dorkus Morkanikus'!

BATTLE-FORGED
Big Mek - Shokk Attack Gun, Gitfinda, Finkin Cap
Big Mek - Shokk Attack Gun, Gitfinda

19 Gretchin - Grot Prod/Hound
19 Gretchin - Grot Prod/Hound
16 Gretchin - Grot Prod/Hound
16 Gretchin - Grot Prod/Hound

Morkanaut - KFF/Grot Riggers/Extra Armor
Deff Dread - Grot Riggers/Extra Armor
Deff Dread - Grot Riggers/Extra Armor
5 Killa Kans - 3 Grotzookas, 2 Rokkits
5 Killa Kans - 3 Grotzookas, 2 Rokkits
5 Killa Kans - 5 Big Shootas

1750

UNBOUND
Big Mek - Shokk Attack Gun, Gitfinda, Finkin Cap
Big Mek - Shokk Attack Gun, Gitfinda

27 Gretchin - 2xRuntherd w/Grot Prod, 1 Hound
26 Gretchin - 2xRuntherd w/Grot Prod, 1 Hound

Morkanaut - KFF/Grot Riggers/Extra Armor
Deff Dread - Grot Riggers/Extra Armor
Deff Dread - Grot Riggers/Extra Armor
5 Killa Kans - 3 Grotzookas, 2 Rokkits
5 Killa Kans - 3 Grotzookas, 2 Rokkits
6 Killa Kans - 6 Big Shootas

1749
----------
Updated and applied a few things I learned. After 2 games, and watching some Battle Reports that had Kans, I'm starting to feel that the best setup for Kans now is 4 Big Shootas/ 2 Rokkits. Grotzookas did get better, but the 18" range means they won't get to shoot as often, and they don't get to Overwatch. That said, I'm happy with the still not going with the 4/2 setup (or 3/2 in this list), as the one unit with all Big Shootas will hopefully draw the attention for the first turn since they have the 36" range. While it hasn't happend yet, the 'Kan LD' test isn't as bad as the nay-sayers think. It doesn't autofail on a 1, so if you're not running them in units of 1 model, then I feel that 5 should be the minimum. At 5-6 your opponent is going to need to scratch 2 of them to get before they start testing. As for the other weapons, Skorchas are still Lol, and Kustom Mega Blastas, while only 5 pts, aren't worth the extra AP, when Rokkits are free.

Addition of Gitfindas, is more to make it easier to remember that the whole unit is BS3, than for any tactical reasons. Going to try out 'Da Finkin Cap' since it seems to be fitting for Big Mek Warlords. I've been playing 1.5 K Games (running 2 units of Kans), and have informed my opponents that I am running unbound, but the only difference is I'm dropping the additional required Gretchin units. When they hear that I'm doin this, they seem to remove the Unbound=Unfun mentality. So I've included the Unbound list I would play, but would have no issue going to the Battle-Forged if I needed to.

I can still drop that 3rd unit of Killa Kanz. That will allow me to squeeze in 5 Mek Guns w/Traktor guns and an ADL w/Quadgun for the 2 Shokk Attack Guns. Having Big Shootas and Rokkits keeps the cost down, and effectively gives me a Twin-linked AT Rokkits if I need it. Spreading them around allows me some flex with how I deal with AT. I'll have 18 Kans so there is some play there, I dropped to 3 units of 5 to beef up the Grot squads. Not that this will have much of an impact on the game, but it will look a bit more impressive.

With Grotz as Troops, I've got one of the best filler units in the game. As the points go higher, I'll just add more Grotz. I'd like to squeeze in a 3rd Big Mek in Mega Armor, to ride inside the Morkanaut so he can repair from inside with 'Da Fixer Upperz'. I'd probably make him my Warlord because he would be harder to get at, harder to kill, and won't SAG himself. I'd also like to add 2 of the Meks to 2 of the Grot units for some additional potential repair on the Dreds. I've been keeping the Morkanaut at the 1.5k Level instead of dropping him to keep the 3 units of Kans, and it's been working pretty well. Haven't had anyone play under the 1.5k, so don't have any lists for that.

The 2 Games I've had have been a LOT of fun, and very entertaining to watch and play.

It's a Battle-forged, 2 CAD list.

Big Mek - Shokk Attack Gun
Big Mek - Shokk Attack Gun

10 Grotz - Runtherd w/Shock Prod
10 Grotz - Runtherd w/Shock Prod
10 Grotz - Runtherd w/Shock Prod
10 Grotz - Runtherd w/Shock Prod

Ork Deff Dread w/Grot Riggerz, Extra Armor
Ork Deff Dread w/Grot Riggerz, Extra Armor
6 Killa Kanz w/Grotzookaz
6 Killa Kanz w/Grotzookaz
5 Killa Kanz w/Grotzookaz
Morkanaut w/KFF, Grot Riggerz

Alternatively, I can drop that 5 squad unit of Killa Kanz. That will allow me to squeeze in 5 Mek Guns w/Traktor guns and an ADL w/Quadgun for the 2 Shokk Attack Guns.

These points are rough estimates, but with Grotz as Troops, I've got one of the best filler units in the game. As the points go higher, I'll just add more Grotz, which will be HILARIOUS if they benefit from the Greenskin Horde rule. I'll also probably squeeze in another Big Mek and stick him in the Morkanaut so he can repair from inside (There is a unique 1 per army gear that allows Orks to do this.) If the points go lower then the Morkanaut is the first thing to get dropped. At ~300 pts, he'll get me down under the 1.5k mark w/o losing the theme of this force, and I get more Grotz!

Either way, should be a LOT of fun, and very entertaining to watch and play.

Looks like fun. But why are you x2 CAD? you don't seem to need it. Does Big Mek no longer make Deff Dreads into Troops?

Objective Secured Deff Dreds are gone sadly. Even if they were still available, I'd need a 2nd CAD because I'd still have 4 Heavy Support with the Morkanaut. Not really an issue since I have 35pt Troop choices. Nice thing about the army is that most of the abilities in the New Dex are worded with 'Models in the same Faction', so they work cross-CAD. Fun things about the list that will just have everyone laughing and crying. KFF's and Grot Riggers are awesome, just get used to seeing them. Kans are up in points, but can go to 6 model units and with Grotzookas they're pretty scary. They also have a special way to fail Morale Checks for 25% casualties, despite being walkers. (Yes, Grotz are cowards even inside Walkers!!!) This is also a key reason why the Deff Dreds are in the list because they help with it.

One thing that I will note about the new dex that Im not sure if I like it our not, and it has nothing to do with the rules, it's the format. They took out the Army Selection section. So all the points/options are listed along with their description, along with a little Icon as to what FoC slot they occupy.
So it's unfamiliar to NOT be able to look up what is an HQ, or Troops choice, etc. It makes the 'Mek' (Not Big Mek) entry confusing as to whether you can take them as an HQ on their own or not, but not an issue for what I am doing here. It's hard to say more because I don't physically have the Dex yet, I was only allowed to take a peek.

For what I wanted to do though I took a look at all the units that I would take in a themed list like this.

Deff Dreds
Killa Kans
Mek Guns
Morkanaut
Stompa (Yes the rules for it are IN the codex as a LoW slot!)

All but the Stompa are Heavy Support, so I even had to toy around with taking a 3rd CAD to be able to add Mek Guns to the mix until we start seeing some Unbound Events. Even with the 2 CAD, I ran out of points really fast, so not going to worry about it just yet. 18 Kans comes to around 1k pts, so that doesn't leave much left to justify a 3rd CAD at this point.

Updated list for 'Detachment' debate...

Big Mek w/Shokk Attack 'Eavy Armor
Big Mek w/Shokk Attack 'Eavy Armor

18 Gretchin/Runtherd w/ Grot Prod ,Hound
18 Gretchin/Runtherd w/ Grot Prod ,Hound
10 Gretchin/Runtherd w/ Grot Prod ,Hound
10 Gretchin/Runtherd w/ Grot Prod ,Hound

Morkanaut w/KFF, Grot Riggers
Deff Dread w/Grot Riggers, Armor
Deff Dread w/Grot Riggers, Armor
6 Killa Kans w/ 2xRokkit, 4xGrotzooka
6 Killa Kans w/ 2xRokkit, 4xGrotzooka
3 Mek Guns w/Traktor Guns, +5 Gretchin, 3xAmmo Runt

I made this list since there seems to be some debate about whether or not the Ork Codex can use the Standard Battle-Forged format, or if they're forced to use one out of the codex. If they're forced to use the one in the Codex, then the debate about the Troops getting 'Objective Secured' is leaving us scratching our heads. I'm in the camp that they can use the ones in the BRB, but obviously don't gain any of the benefits. ie, 'Greenskin Hordes' etc. As cool as it would be to just see Gretchin with HoW, I'd rather have them as Objective Secured, and flex points around to get more Gretchin, than be forced to take.

PLEASE comment on this list, and don't argue the rule here.

Just saying to clarify, you can use the basic detachment in the BRB :p Codex detachments are just fun racial extras! WOO!

As for the list, I love everything except maybe the Traktor guns. I mean, unless you KNOW your facing fliers, they seem a little too risky to bring. Again, just my opinion, since they will be snap firing at grounded targets. But i love the amount of Kanz! I finally got myself up to 12 Kanz now, which makes me super happy, and 2 Dreds with a Morkanaught. I can now run my own mechy goodness.

Grots keep it nice and cheap and give you an abundance of wounds to keep the BM safe while he is firing off blasts on your opponent. If you can manage the points, Git Finda may be a nice touch too. It may only bring him to Grot BS, but that extra inch off the Scatter could be a few extra hits!

(Updated the list)
Yeah, it was a debate that happened the day after the Dex came out, and I don't think anyone is saying I can't use the BRB option anymore, Still not a bad list if I wanted to have some fun with HoW Grotz!

Also, started a WIP thread.
