Hey dakka, I've been into 40k a while and orks have always been cool to me (have forgeworld death guard army and nids). I've started orks after the new codex. I so far just have one box of boyz and plan on building bit by bit.

My question is this, I have made my 10 boyz with shootas and the nob with PK.

I'm wondering about doing squads of boys with say 10 shootas in da frunt, and then the rest choppy and sluggy boyz behind and go for the assault as soon as possible utilising the extra and better raged shots. Would this work or would all one or the other be better? Say shootas for staying back a little and shooting/objectives and the slugga boyz running up for the assault?

Thanks for any help and sorry for the rambling,
James

What sort of army you fancy playing?
Greentide? with tonnes of boyz
Speed freaks? with trukk boys

If your going greentide then some shoota boys in front is a viable idea, but remember, when there slogging it up field at some point you will not want to run in order to shoot. whereas your units behind will want to run. giving you issues with getting them past each other potentially.

Speed freaks, I think choppas are slightly better atm, due to you not wanting to keep your boys in the trukks. But a unit of shoota boys wouldn't go amiss

Favourite Game: When your Warboss on bike wrecks 3 vehicles simply by HoW - especially when his bike is a custom monowheel.

Slugga boyz are usually running during their shooting phase, so the shootaz would get in their way. Better have the shootaz in the back, or make them all shootaz.

A shoota boy is still pretty good in assault, it just has the ability to shoot well on top of that.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Cheers guys. Thinking of doing half and half, then I can use them as they are or have all shoota boyz or all slugga boyz.

I don't know what sort of army I'm really going for to be honest. May look at writing some army lists and going from there

Just to clarify, are you talking about mixing shootas and sluggas within a unit, or running both kinds of units? The former is only possible in the Green Tide, otherwise you have to run a mob as one or the other.

As for running both kinds of units, it's probably a good idea. If you've got boyz in a trukk or wagon, you can deliver them into CC range and probably don't benefit from shootas. The points difference is also a reason to consider sluggas. Shootas are better for maintaining a large threat bubble without relocating, so they can be good for holding objectives or staying between two elements.

Bloodbath is right, if you take Shootas the entire mob gets it.
So you would need two units.

I would probably go with melee-Boyz only; a unit of 10 Shoota seems so fragile and I'd rather take 15 with a Nob and run towards the opponent.

Unfortunately the entire mob must take the shoota upgrade, or 'eavy armor upgrade.

If they could pick and choose i probably would stick a few shootas in there too since face it only about HALF of a boyz blob until they get wittled down to ~10 strong get to swing at any given time in combat anyway. The additional shooting would be highly beneficial.

Shootas arent dead though as people seem to think. Theyre just not auto-take now since we actually have viable ways to get slugga boyz in combat now, and theyre pretty menacing when they get there. Shoota boyz arent far behind (-1 attack is all) but make up for it in the shooting phase.
I prefer sluggas because i want to assault with my orks, not be a gunline. Ive even shelved my lootas, and the only actual "gun" i take thats not a stock pistol or bigshoota is lobba batteries.

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.
