Hey thanks for the compliment. Well I know what you mean but I must say, I have painted 150 clan rats so far, in much less time than it has taken to do some of my ultramarine units. Using my basic batchpaint steps you should be able to knock out good looking models FAST.

Hey, yeah it can work for other models also. Orks generally have a bit more detail on the models than Skaven, so they might need a bit more work.
Then again if you plan your batch paint "steps" carefully, work out something that has as few steps possible, re-using the same colors around the model for different things where possible.

What also works is to use the batch paint approach to get a "baseline" paint job on all the models first. Then go back later on to add some nice final details like checker marks to give the models a final quality push.
The batch paint will give you table top ready models fast, which is satisfying, and the look is very consistent across all models. The option to go back and give some models some extra 'love' is always there and can be done months later.

I'm about to start a large Skaven army from scratch and this made for very useful reading. Some great tips I hadn't thought of. Thank you for posting!

Ahh, serendipity! I was JUST talking to a mate about wanting to start Skaven once my Lizards were finished, but I said I just couldn't be fecked with painting such vast numbers.

Then I saw this.

Perfect timing. I have the IoB skaven starter so I think I can start sooner rather than later!

Cheers Chris!

Hey mate, glad you like the article. Feel free to like/love/share the blogpost

I think Skaven is a great army that can be painted fast in simple steps and still look AWESOME on the tabletop. Other armies are less forgiving with simple paint jobs as they are much more "clean and posh" looking such as Dwarfs, Elves etc.
With Skaven you want that muddy, gritty look.

My advise again summarized:

1. Assemble models, glue basing sand on, Prime everything black, including sand on bases so they are extra "firm"
2. Overbrush entire model Dryad Bark or similar dark brown color, Overbrush again as "highlight" with lighter brown on Head, Fur at arms, Legs and Base.
3. Paint clothing parts a gray color and a green color (or other of choice)
4. Highlight clothes with a lighter color, preferably the same color as used for the base color (alternating). You can dry brush or paint lines with a fine brush. What you like best.
5. Paint teeth and eyes bone/white color. Lightly drybrush armor on heads, shoulder, shields with bone color as well to make them "pop" out. This gives you fakking cool black armor that is soo evil

6. Finish basing in whatever fashion you like. I use a toothpick to dab on wood glue, then dip the base in static grass, finish of with a random tuft of stick on dead grass.

Well the trick is to repeat the same step for ALL or at least 10 to 20 models before doing the next step. But believe me, once primed black steps like over brushing the entire model with dark brown is like blitzkrieg speed.
You literally can do 30 models or more in 10 minutes. Keep in mind the models will look bad and messy right up until the last step when you put on the grass and paint the edges of the base cleanly again.
I found this to be the case with whatever I paint, not until I paint the edge of the base in a clean color again will the model look good and finished. So don't worry if things look crappy mid-way. Judge again when you finished a few with complete tidy base.

Please post some pictures of your results mate!!
