Im new to 40k and broke so I decided the best way in was to buy the dark vengeance set then scratch build as much as possible. This thread will show some of the results. Im specifically interested in collecting chaos so it would be great to get feedback on how to build a decent army and suggestions on what troops, vehicles etc. I should build next.

Reading online it sounds like helldrakes are a must in a chaos army but as I think the GW helldrake looks like a stupid robotic poweranger boss I thought id have a bash at scratch building one

Rooting through my attic I also found an old rhino tank I painted when I was about 6. Their must have been about an inch of paint on the model so I soaked it in a bath of detol and scrubbed it clean. In the process almost all of the spikey bits fell off so I decided to heavily convert this piece as well. Im quite happy with how this one turned out. Still need to find a small bell to hang on the struts at the back...

The Dark vengeance hellbrute is already an awesome model so I didnt want to muck around with it too much. All I knew is that I didnt like the look of the head in the mouth and that I wanted to give it a stag theme.

Awesome stuff... I absolutely love the Stag themed dread, I might have to steal that for my Nurgle dread.

Love the rusted out / converted rhino too.

These are great!

I have always thought the Hellbrute looked way too... silly...

but I love yours! It looks so much more menacing without a face.

Nice work dude. The rhino and helbrute look awesome. Not sure about the heldrake though, mainly because I can't reallymake out any detail.

On another note, if you're building your army on a budget and need some bits, drop me a line. I've got tons of stuff left over from my csm army that I'd be happy to donate.

Just laid down some base coat colours to see how they look together. Tbh im not to happy with the colour scheme, its pretty drab. Any idea how I could make it pop a bit more?

LOL, I was thinking 'jeeze that helldrake is painted poorly...' - didn't catch on that's what it looked like BEFORE it was even primed The helldrake you just posted looks utterly amazing, I LOVE it. I'm usually not a fan of nurgle conversions honestly like they're impressive but are just... gross and unappealing to me lmao, but that looks gross but, gorgeous? It's very well sculpted and very well painted.

I get what you mean about drab but... nurgle conversions usually DO look drab? It's all mold and rot. If you wanted I could see you heavily contrasting it with maybe the guts and the back carapace being like bright pinks and purples or something but... idk, I like it all mono greens and rusts. It's very subtle, it looks like a big spore. I like it.

There must be a million heldrake conversions out there, and the vast majority of them look worse than the GW model. Then, you show up and display *Gasp* actual creativity

I went to Hershey Park in central PA this year, and I have to say I was more than a little disappointed. I fully expected the entire theme park to be make entirely of chocolate, but no. Here in America, we have "building codes," and some other nonsense about chocolate melting if don't store it someplace kept below room temperature.

First off Dedeye... these are awesome! Nurgle is such a great force for the broke, as almost anything is susceptible to corruption! MUAHAHAHAH!

But first ima share a tip; It seem like you use GS and that you also use milliput? (the yellow sculpting stuff). If you haven't already, mix the two, you get the ability to sand of the milliput, with the flexibility and non-brittleness of the GS. You can mix in ratios dependant on task.
In return... please tell me how you made such a fantastic billowing cloak!! did you roll it out, let it cure a bit and then shape it?

also you can use a fine hair comb to roll over gs/milliput and create power cables/intestines. then let it cure till its still flexible but not going to be ruined by your fingers and apply with a dab of superglue

Dude the GS + milliput is a master stroke! Thanks for that tip its so useful!

Theres usually two ways I do cloaks. The standard GS cloak I do by rolling out the greenstuff flat on some glass that Ive lubricated (usually with vaccine) I then let it cure for about an hour. Once it goes hardish I cut out the shape of the cloak I want and then to fray the edges I pinch and pull the ends. If the curing is just right its hard enough to hold its main shape but weak enough to be drawn out a little. If I want a hole in I will pierce the cloak a few times with a safety pin before I do the pinch and pull. Then once the shape and size is right I glue the cape to the neck of the figure and bend in the folds. By this time about an hour and a half as passed so the billows of the cloak stay put. I then support the cloak with random things while its drying to make sure it stays in position without crafty gravity ruining all my hard work.

My other cloak method is a bit weirder. I pour some PVA onto a plate and put it in the microwave for about 20 seconds. This makes it bubble and settle in all these awesome vainy looking patterns. (this is awesome for nurgle cloaks because it looks like flayed skin) then once the pva has completely dried you can peel it off the plate then I just paint super glue on to it, position it, then spray activator on the superglue to dry it into the desired position. The only problem with these capes are that they are a bit brittle. if you can think of any way to sort the brittleness out Id really value your opinion.

Cheers

Hmm
Thanks for the info Ded
I will give your cape methods a go, Your making me want to start a nurgle force ;P

as for ideas about your veiny capes.
  • how about using method 1, except instead roll it on some slightly crumpled cling film? you know how cling film gets, hopefully the GS might imprint some of the effect and when you peel it off later it will have a nice veiny pattern
  • Apparently, GS in the microwave also bubbles, I have yet to try it, but maybe after method 1, a short burst in the microwave? Although I think it needs to be short, the dudes model who said he'd done that had some big fat bubbles.
  • inverting your PVA method? do exactly what you do, except instead of using the PVA as the cloak, use it as the effect. - Roll your GS on top of the PVA glue to imprint that into the GS.

  • Thoughts on those?
