The chest pieces with the Tabards do not fit any of the back pieces of the torso...anyone else have this issue?

I didn't have this problem - make sure you check the instructions that come with it. I think I used some back pieces from the standard Space Marines kit as well.

The problem I had was fitting the torso onto the legs - the tabards can get in the way if the legs are posed in certain ways

I had the same issue with the Thousand Son upgrade pack, three of the six didn't fit well. Solved it with some green stuff, maybe you could do so as well?

How do they "not fit"? Is it just the alignment of the pegs and holes? You can remove the pegs and just line it up. A little more effort to hold it together while it dries, but not really a big deal.

Some of the kits have slight variations, and I'm guessing you may be trying to use them with the current tactical kit while that upgrade kit is pretty old.

A lot of the figures in my project are from plastic Marine sprues of various age and I've found slight fitment issues between different eras as I swapped in more recent torso fronts, etc. In the situations where this happened, I just did as above. Snipped the pegs off.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

You're trying to get them fit to back pieces from the new Tactical Marine, Sternguard or Vanguard kits, right? Then newer kits have slightly different torso construction than the older ones (to which the BT kit was designed to fit), so you need to cut the pegs (and possibly the edge of the neck hole, I can't quite remember) to make them fit properly. Shouldn't be too hard.
