Finally getting around to painting up the in-progress buildings I showed a couple weeks ago. You can see the in-progress pictures
here:
http://chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com/2014/08/toy-bashing-urban-terrain.html
The first one done is the "Building Under Construction" which is based on a "Fast Lane" (Toys R Us store brand) Parking Garage that I found at a resale shop for $3! Though I don't currently play Necromunda (have the figs though and hope to someday), this building has a very Necro look to me. As you can see, it's quite a sizable structure.
Side view
Close up of the ground floor HVAC/Elevator shaft unit. The whole model is painted in a very fast method of prime, drybrush basecoat, 2 brown washes and drybrush tan, so it's slightly less impressive up close.
Though there's alot of open space, there's sitll alot of opportunities for cover, and I'm working on some construction and warehouse themed scatter terrain (coming later)
Lots more pics and my ramblings here:

Very cool, looks like it could add a lot of height to a battlefield and is large enough to see use in 40k too.

You most certainly do.

Thanks, that's actually exactly what I was thinking. I wanted to build a few pieces of terrain that are interesting and accessible enough to be used in skirmish games, but large enough and with enough floorspace that it could be used in squad based games also. Additionally they needed to be big enough to block or obscure line of sight for the 28mm "Mech Attack" games that I play occasionally and run at conventions, where the largest mechs are often around 8 inches tall.

If you're thinking of the Timberwolf that had a little video game thing in it, that's a different model, though they are similarly colored and probably near the same size.
This is one of the die-cast and plastic Mad Cat's from the line released by "Joyride" toys to support the Mechwarrior Dark Age clix game.

Back with a smaller piece. A power station built from a Hot Wheels car launcher. Very little conversion work required on this one. more pics and descriptions here: http://chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com/2014/08/terrain-triptych-part-2-power-station.html Coming soon, the big one!

Here's the next one, and it's a biggie.
An Elevated Train Station. This one began it's life as a Fisher Price GEO Trax playset. It's just the start of a Terrain Sub-set that I'm working on that will be an elevated train line. I've got all the necessary pieces, I've just got to get assembling and painting. Stay Tuned for future posts.
As always pics from every angle (including the underside) and other details here:

What paints are you using for these? Do you find it hard to get good coverage and consistency on the toy plastics?
I tried a few years ago with basic Gw paints and it was a disaster.

I use almost exclusively Delta Ceramcoat craft paints. I've tried all the brands of craft paint and it's the one that is closest in pigmentation and consistency to miniature-brand paints. It's not as good, but it's good enough for me and it's what I use for most of my figures as well. Also, it's a dollar and thirty cents for 2 oz instead of 4 dollars for a half an oz, so that's nice.
The real key though is priming. What did you use to prime the toy you were painting? For hard plastic toys I use cheap dollar cans of flat black spray paint most every big box and home repair store has some version. For soft plastics or plastics I'm not sure about I use Krylon Camo Flat Black. It use the "fusion" tech (though it says so in small letters) that Krylon uses to indicate sprays that are formulated to bond to soft plastics. It doesn't have quite the "tooth" that the cheap spray paint does, but it takes paint well and allows good coverage.
As for consistency, it's not a huge issue for me because my method of painting is a heavy drybrush of the base color over black, followed by a couple of brown washes and a tan drybrush. Uneven coverage isn't as big a deal because you want the buildings to look worn and a couple brown washes and a drybrush of tan blends it all together anyway. Look close at my work and you'll see black showing through at places, but it works with the overall look.

The terrain insanity continues. Here's a bit that I made for my friend. He had the lone three tanks on a desert gravel base, but wanted to spice it up a bit. He agreed to paint up a Salvage Crew for me if I gave it "The Treatment". Some pipes to connect the tanks, a few i-beams and some paint and whole new piece is born!

I was sorry to let this one go, but I'm sure I'll be battling on it soon. Looking forward to it!

Interestingly a fellow in Germany saw the Hot Wheels launcher piece and was so inspired, he ordered 4!

Thanks! It's actually a really easy paint job to do and I use it on almost all my terrain. Just Black Prime, Heavy crybrush of colors, 2 heavy brown washes, a drybrush of dusty tan over everything and spray on some matte varnish.

Glad you liked it. What surprised me was how fun scatter terrain is to build. Building terrain is already my favorite part of the hobby, but scatter terrain goes together and paints so fast that it's like waves of accomplishment.

Time to add a bit of church to my dreary urban landscape. Finally sat down and hammered out a building from a pile of Pegasus Gothic Terrain parts that I've had sitting around my workspace for a while. I wanted to go the extra mile for this one, so it has proper roofs (removable of course), parapet walls (lots of cutting…) and a mildly decorative floor.
And to really mix it up, it's not ye old grimdark grey!!!
Really pleased with the Pegasus kits. Alot of DIY is required to get the most out of them, but with the right tools, they're great to work with and build a really impressive and sturdy structure that sits well in a multitude of genres and eras.
As usual, more pics and an excruciatingly over-detailed description of the process is on the blog: http://chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com/2014/09/terrain-cathedral-de-la-pegasus.html
