I play Necrons atm but don't know much about other armies. I have heard that Nurgle are monstrously beefy. I love to play defensy and hard to kill strategies in my games. So my question is, what army can build the most effective 'i will not die' army?

Ghost arcs, rez orbs and warrior spam seems like a viable option but when I tried it I lost upward of 1000 points in two turns thanks to sweeping advance.

I think tau play a defensive type strategy along with armored IG. They basically sit back at the edge of their deployment zone and shoot at you.

Hard to kill on a per model basis or hard to kill overall?

- Necrons are pretty durable thanks to RP and Ghost Arks
- Guard use substantial numbers which can be made to be somewhat durable in several ways.
- Termie armies are harder to kill on a per model basis
- Armour/mech armies are much harder to kill per model ofc.

If you're talking specifically about Crons, silver tide with ghost arks and lords with res orbs is definitely the way to go. 20 man squads of warriors with res orbs walking up backed up by Ghost arks can take a feth load of fire. Their ability to do this in Dawn of War was what sold me on the new crons when I saw a good deal for them. I lvoed the "heavy durable infantry march of death" vibe from them ; )

You could try allying in some cheap melee units like Orks? I haven't played 7th though so fuzzy on such things now. You could try buffering your units with scarab swarms (possibly buffed up by spyders) or counter charging with wraiths to keep your warriors less molested.

Also, to answer your question. In the games I have played thus far it seems to me that 2+/3++ saves completely dominate the game. I tried throwing a plethora of shots at them and they just laughed, but a relative newb fighting GN was never a fair fight to begin with I suppose.

So I guess I really want to know who can 'shrug off' basically anything and keep going. I figured it was Necrons because when they go down they cannot be targeted any more and get back up just in time for your turn but they have such pitiful melee defence that sweeping advance makes the large groups kind of a joke. Perhaps I should use more crypteks for melee avoidance.

Watching a vid where this guy using CSM has a unit that has a 2+ invuln that is rerollable. Seems kind of insane to be, wanted to probe about for stuff like that.

Honestly? If you've no issue with using stuff that is blatantly broken, its hands down the Eldar. All your infantry in nigh-impossible to kill Wave Serpents backed up by an impossible to kill Seer Council deathstar. Oh, and both basically destroy anything faster than your opponent can finish his soul-piercing stare of hatred.

Otherwise, if you value friends, Necrons have very hard to kill infantry and vehicles (the former take time to delete off the board and the latter are highly resistant to light AT), Guard are the most likely faction to take a defensive gunline stance at any point and have some Leman Russes, that when used properly, are very hard to dispose of without ideal equipment or good luck.

Tau. Hide and shoot

For the guy who leaves it all on the field (because he doesn't pick up after the game).

The answer is flying monstrous creatures. Need 6 to hit them w/o a flyer or skyfire. Nids also have a high toughness on those FMCs.

Necron flying circus is really durable also b/c not a lot can hurt it.

If you like Necrons and want Durable, you could try looking into the Forge World stuff - Tomb Sentinels and Tomb Stalkers are both T7, 5-wound monstrous creatures with 3+ saves and an upgrade that gives them IWND. Fast Attack and Elites, respectively. They're also deep striking robotic sandworms, the former of which has a three-shot blast version of the Wraith heavy weapon.

This. Lots of long range camping strategies. I have been cooking up an Imperial Fist army to be used with Stronghold Assault and I can see them being quite effective at it.

Defensive how?

Evasive? Or tanky? Or versatile? Many ways to be defensive.

Tau are the masters of a versatile defense/offense. Just not being there to be hit. And yet able to adapt and strike quickly. Tau are water. Easily evading and counter attacking. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGFf3SRP1bE

Eldar are like Air. Hard to hit at all with their cheesiest of builds.

Dark Eldar are like Fire. An overwhelming force that forgoes defense for nothing but attacks. So high of rate of attack they do not need defense.

However if your looking for more strength and endurance in your defense. The imperial guard is the key. The IG are like stone. Enduring and unrelenting.

I would say they are the four factions best suited to defense. It just depends on what school of defense you subscribe too.
