Hi ya'll, currently working on long term Chaos conversion process and starting to browse for armor. In an effort to obtain a unique and cohesive look I'm considering steering away from tracked vehicles (for the time being at least). Are there any good sources for MRAP's, armored cars, or mutli-wheeled APC's? I looked a some Drop Zone and Flames of War stuff, but the scale was just too far off. Thanks in advance!

Why not just take 35mm Military Models and convert them as need be. You can always get tanks bits and stuff on ebay or from GW.

Depends on how badly skewed your eye has become...

There are a handful of 1/48 scale models that would be useable - even with the deformed 28mm proportions.

Airfix's Afghanistan line in particular has the Coyote and Jackal. There is also a pretty good selection of WWII era armored vehicles in 1/48 scale (Staghounds, M20s, various Sd.Kfz versions...).

Lots of diecast ends up falling in the 1/43 scale range.

There are even some 28mm modern vehicle manufacturers like S&S Models, Sloppy Jalopy, Force of Arms (though I think Warlord bought them out) and Empress (many of which are the old Imprint Models).

The problem though...is that you are talking about conversions for Chaos...

This means you may well suffer from a stange body dysmorphia condition that causes your eyes to think that vehicles should be the size of houses... As a result, you will probably need to look at 1/35 scale models (of which there is not shortage).

Ooo, both good points.

I think I could probably work with 35mm stuff...didn't even think about that. I'm so entrenched in the GW mini's mindset that its hard to break out of. I'll poke around on google for some of the companies mentioned.

LOL! Quite the opposite. I am going for a more sleek and organic look with relative attempts at proportionality (within the heroic scale). More Cthulu than Khorne.

This one from the 1/48 scale Sloppy Jalopy line is neat looking. Much appreciated for the heads up!

Interest in that particular vehicle changes things a bit...

Interwar and WWI armored cars are available from lots of different companies.

Company B, in particular has a bunch of those (and armored trains from WWII era...).

Brigade also has there own line of vehicles:

Of course, there are also additional scale models too. Model A and Model AA armored vehicles are pretty easy to come by. You can also pick up the regular kits and use plasticard to add armor to them.

I'm not a stickler for period, its up to the creativity of the artist to make it fit cohesively with the rest of the project.

Mostly I just don't want to make another land raider with a giant penis cannon.

You might want to look at Dreamforge's upcoming APC for a strong WWII APC in space vibe.

I have 3 from the KS coming and can't wait.

For a similar look I had fun converting this German thing into an armored limo for my inquisitor

Oh man, this is awesome!

Also found this to add to the thread...not a model kit but certainly a cool old ass armored car. Its the Skoda Tortoise from 1923.

Yep - there were a few "streamliners" from the period.

JP Hobby did a 1/35 scale model of that, I also have a couple 1/72 from CMK.

My favorite of that style are the Hispano Suiza armored cars. Miniarons does one in 1/56, 1/72 and 1/100 scale - the MC-36. There were several others produced (either as production - or prototypes) during the Spanish Civil War.

Somewhere in south-central England.

The GW vehicles are designed with the same kind of "semi deformed" aesthetic as the infantry models. You will find that 1/49 scale kits are often the right length but too narrow and low, while 1/35 scale kits are the right length and height but too long.

One solution might be to take an 8-wheel Piranha/Stryker kit in 1/35, and literally chop enough of the hull out to lose a wheel. It should come together fairly well and might give you the GW heroic look.

There are many similar vehicle kits on the market like this one, as the MOWAG Piranha family is very widely used.

http://www.scalemodelshop.co.uk/1-35-m1131-stryker-fire-support-vehicle-trumpeter-tp00398.html?utm_source=googleps

Judging from the box art, it probably would be easy to chop out the last axle and corresponding hull, and join it back together.

In the spirit of inter-war vehicles, here is a Kommissar Kar I did using a 1/35 Zvezda kit of a 1930s Russian armoured car. Those early vehicles are a lot smaller than modern ones and fit better with GW figures even though being 1/35 scale.

Honestly don't mind those as much, Leviathans and other humongous vehicles that are interesting for their absurdity.

The Rhino though (and its variants) would be nearly 14 feet wide. That is a good 2 feet wider than pretty much every main battle tank ever made.

Even monsters like the Maus, T95, E100 and other "super heavy" armor were just barely the same size...and if you have ever been around any of those in museums - those are freaking huge...

...and the Rhino is one of GW's smaller vehicles.

Have a look in this thread for possible models. Hobby Link Japan has a sale on at the moment and there are several kits that might work for you.

I used USMC LAVs for Chimera. At 1/48 scale you can just cut out some stuff in the wheel wells and it will shorten the model up to be a perfect 1/1 scale to a Chimera. I used an Italian Centauro for Leman Russes with minimal conversion work.

Other good vehicles are Stryker and Stryker MGSs. Both are wheel armored vehicles and both have become MRAPs in the past few years.
