Greetings Dakkanoughts

I thought I'd share with you some of my counts-as Tallarn flavoured IG that I've been working on recently. I've always liked the imagery of the classic Tallarns but never been keen on the fact that the modelling opportunities are fairly limited with the one piece sculpts. So the solution was to kit bash my own by using the GW High Elf archer legs as a base, longer robes than the original miniatures as you know but I'm going to say that they're part of a veteran regiment that have been given some leeway as to their battle-dress. I've been gathering suitable bits and bobs for the last few months and have finally got to this point where I'm just a sergeant short of my first squad.

So, step forward the 27th Tallarn Sand Spectres, hope you like, C&C are always welcome, especially if any of you have a good idea on how they should be painted!

Very cool idea!

As for painting, how about taking inspiration from the Haradrim in the LotR movies? Lots of dark browns and deep reds, with purple as a spot color.

I like them however, they look like Taliban fighters. It may be a stereotype but, with all the problems as of late I just can't get those images out of my head.

This is a really cool and unique unit you've got here. Care to do a bits breakdown beyond the High Elf legs?

Also, any worries that have been brought up in this thread about them looking like Taliban or what have you can be dissuaded with a suitable paint scheme. The Haradrim scheme could look neat.

As for more scheme ideas, 'Eavy Metal did a few:

Hey all, wow, thanks for your kind comments, much appreciated!

The inspiration for these troopers came from seeing old WW1 photos of the tribesmen who fought with Lawrence of Arabia in the Middle East - all billowing robes and baggy harem trousers, rising up out of a wadi to ambush the enemy before making their escape under the cover of a passing sandstorm! I'm definitely leaning towards a Haradrim style paint scheme, dark browns and dark reds and black should contrast nicely with the inevitable sandy desert base, so cheers guys for your great suggestions. The resin bases are from Deamonscape by the way, pretty well detailed and cheap too!

I sliced the top off the legs to make the overall miniature shorter and to make the waist thicker for the upper torso to fit better and sculpted some coat tails to tie the two together. My bits seller of choice was having a half price sale a few months back so I bagged as many High Elf archer legs as I could, must have about 30 legs or so, enough to get started on a small raiding force! The torso is the great coat torso from MaxMini, always liked the look of it with it's pouches and double breasted tunic. The heads are from Puppetswar and MaxMini again, the Puppetswar ones are slightly smaller than the MaxMini offerings but hopefully when they're all painted the differences shouldn't be so noticeable. Both were equally a pain to fit to the torsos though, hence the use of GS around the collars and headgear. The arms with lasrifles are from Victoria Miniatures, her rolled sleeve arms, I cut the rolled sleeves off (don't worry I do have a use for them!) and made baggier sleeves from some old Empire knights of the White Wolf arms and Empire Huntsmen arms. There's also a few bare arms from Anvil Industries too, such as on the melta-gunner, that got the same treatment. Overall putting the arms together was a bit of a fiddly process and I used GS on them to make the sleeves that little bit deeper and to conceal the join. The curved blade and the scabbards are from Wargames Factory's ancient Greek range to represent the trooper's personal weapon and a link to their homeworld, whilst the rest of their belt gear is just from the plastic Cadian sprue albeit modified slightly.

So last up is the sergeant which I'm working on at the moment, no pics of note to show you but as soon as he's done I'll grab my paints give you all a look. I really need to invest in or make my own light box methinks, I'm useless at taking good quality photos of my stuff!
