I wasn't exactly sure, if this guestion is supposed to be here or somewhere else. (i don't have anything against it if somebody wants to move or remove this message for being at the wrong place thou.)

I came back to warhammer fantasycouple of months ago, and now im starting to put my old chaos space marines army together.

(Im asking this because im very fond of my csm dreadnought, even thou hes not very optimal gaming choise. I will always remember, when he frenzied and shot my csm havocs, then hes plasma cannons blast scattered, hitted himself, and paralysed him for the whole next turn. I think wind was blowing too hard against my dreadnought, for hes plasmacannon to hit havocs..? On the turn he was able to do something again... he shot my havocs again and killed 3 out of 5. *Facepalm*, i still really love him, even thou he was my enemies MVP most of the time.)

As topic says, is old chaos dreadnought with nasty "frenzy" or what-ever-rules totally gone? Or has new hellbrute just taken hes place? I was just wondering if i could use my csm dready as hellbrute or something "without really asking" my opponents permission in local/tournament matches. I understand if this is not possible always, if old dready is "just gone", and hellbrute is too different/completely new miniatyre/unit of its own(i dont have new codex yet).

As i understand, it's not usually so picky with miniatures, but as for example, would i lose points in tournaments for using csm dready as hellbrute(the pointing system that is trying to minimise people dont use soda-bottles as carnifex etc).

Thanks for your time.

'Hellbrute' is just the new name for the Chaos Dreadnought.

There shouldn't be any issues with using the old CSM Dread as a Helbrute - it's just a new name really. The new minis are larger overall so if you can bulk up his base it might help any detractors, but I don't see most people legitimately complaining.

Could you give me any suggestions how to "bulk him up?". Im not very seasoned converter, but im willing to put money / time to make him fit new size of the 'hellbrute'.

EDIT: Thanks for the answers, btw.

Second EDIT: Owww, "bulk hes base up" *FACEPALM*. never mind me

As far as I know you don't need to change old models just because new ones are bigger. You don't even need to change the base (like terminators come previously on regular 25mm infantry base, now they are on the bigger 40mm ones).

You don't *need* to, but most people consider it polite. But it's not rude not to.

Green stuff the mechanical parts of the dreadnought to give it the full effect. I have the CSM Dread and Helbrute and the only differences is the flesh bulky part of it.

Yeah, it's more of a name change than anything else.

As for making them look more like dreadnoughts, I'd buy one of the multi-part hellbrute kits and a regular loyalist dreadnought and then kit-bash them together. Add a bit of spikes and stuff, and you'd be good.

Or, if you really like plasticard, you could get a loyalist dreadnought and then chaos it up. That would be a bit of work, though.

See new Imperial Armour 13, there is pure chaos dread.

i would not have a problem with folks using a Chaos Dreadnaught as a Hellbrute. That is an easy proxy.

It's no more a proxy than using Imperial Guard models as Astra MilliVanilli.

In the CSM codex before the helbrute model came out I'm pretty sure in the miniatures gallery they had the metal chaos dread labelled as helbrute. It's not even a proxy, it's just an old version and new version of the same model. There just happened to be a name change too. The above Imperial Guard/Astra Millitarum analogy is apt; just because they're now called Astra Millitarum, doesn't mean using IG models is a proxy.

Yep. It's not a proxy at all.

I would not convert that old dreadnought, it looks way to good! :-)

I use the old styl Dreadnought for (my) Iron Warriors, the new style Helbrute does not fit them IMO.
Some chaos chapters should have more machine-like dreadnoughts/hellbrutes IMO, because they do not mutate or at least do not want or like to mutate like some other chapters do.

The new hellbrut/dreadnought IS mutated, i use that type for the main 4 chaos god chapters.
With 1 new dreadnought box and a few plastic ones from the "old" starter set you can convert whatever you want.

Allthough they are not the best units, i still like to field dreadnoughts/hellbrutes and when i do, preferable a lot of them.

Since when is changing the base (what I was referring to) converting an oop metal model? O.o
