Standard list:

Gaunt's Ghosts.
Eisenhorn/Ravenor
Cain.
Tempestus was shockingly good.

I recommended the opening trilogy of the Horus Heresy. Not only are they well written and have great characters and action but they detail what could be the defining moment of the 40k mythos.

I haven't read a lot of the 40K novels. Those I have read...

Ravenwing
Master of Sanctity

Hammer & Anvil
Firewarrior

I enjoyed them all for the most part. The only comment I'll make is about Firewarrior, and I was disappointed that the Tau were used as a "generic" bad guy, and could have easily been replaced with chaos or eldar without effecting the overall story.

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

I'm going to give my standard advice:

Get a short story anthology.

Reader preferences, novel writers and their fluff interpretation in 40k are very diverse, but the short story anthologies will give you a taste of multiple stories from multiple writers, like a sort of "sample box", allowing you to taste the different pieces and then decide on which author you liked the most. Once you've found a writer you like, you can then invest into their "full" novels.

Ideally, get something like "Dark Imperium" that features stories about several different armies and perspectives, as this is an ideal way to try to see if you like something you may have skipped so far. Good luck!

So far, "Priests of Mars" and "Lords of Mars" have been 2 of the best 40k books I have ever read. I can't vouch for "Gods of Mars" since I'm waiting for the softcover version, but those 2 I recommend to any 40k fan.

But, be warned, mostly it's because how different it is from all the other books I read: the whole exploration feeling, the insane number of factions together, the amazing characters.

Only Eisenhorn felt so different from the usual.

More info, anything linked to Stormtroopers is a big yes to me, the last I read was pretty nice, if a bit depressing.

The Night Lords trilogy by Aaron Dembski-Bowden aren't just my favorite 40k books, they're some of my favorite novels altogether. ADB is my favorite author in the BL stable, right up there with Dan Abnett. Between the two of them, The First Heretic, Know No Fear, and Betrayer make a killer Horus Heresy trilogy too.
