As a relatively unskilled painter/modeler I decided that posting my progress here will help keep me motivated to at least be neat with my work. I am building up a Strigo Vampire Counts army of 2500 (well 2498 pts) and now that I live in Louisiana they are going to need a swamp theme, and an LSU (purple and gold) color scheme. So the army list will consist of a large unit of Crypt Horrors, 2 units of ghouls, one unit of Dire Wolves, a unit of Zombies, a Mortis Engine and the various characters all led by a Ghoul King.
Progress so far has been mostly confined to the Crypt Horrors. I have been combining parts from a few boxes of the GW Crypt Horrors with a pair of boxes of GW River Trolls. I did not realize this when I started ordering parts, but these guys are built on very different scales. I was thus unable to swap heads or arms between the species but I did manage a few weapon swaps. In addition I went with the Varghiest heads for my Crypt Horrors to get the big ears. Now not all of the torsos got matched up with all the right legs or arms for either species for variety's sake. But I am hoping a unified paint/color scheme and base will help time them into a coherent unit.

Here are the Dogs. The dark ones need more work than the light ones. However, I am not sure how to bring them back from flat monochromatic. There was blue in the under tones and base coat, but perhaps not enough... Comments tips, ideas suggestions and critiques are most certainly welcome.

So here are the touched up Crypt Horrors / River Trolls.
I plan to do all the stringy hanging fur in a yellow/golden color for the LSU (purple/gold) scheme, but I am not sure how to be gold and dingy/grimy. The rest of the models in the unit are (if I can figure it out) visible in the spoiler. There are several pictures.

A dry brush on the dogs to highlight the fur, followed by a wash should give them some depth. Also, do a brown wash on the white on your ghouls help as well.
Hope that helps!

The Crypt Horrors are very much a work in progress. Any suggestions on the color to drybrush onto the black dogs for depth of fur? But thanks for the suggestion!

A medium gray dry bush followed by a black wash would be my suggestion.

The Black Dogs with a grey Drybrush. They actually look a lot better now.
