I guess I could stay at home for a little longer, but I agree one has to work. Therefore I'm especially glad I'm getting paid for one of the things, that I love to do, being a smart ass e.g. teaching. I wouldn't want to do anything else just for the money. Plus if you're a fricking genius, you can make good money in any jobfield.
In other news...
I really don't want to derail this blog about everybody's opinion on worklife with my hobby-related spam, but... wait this is a P&M blog...
I've been painting a little this morning and I'll spend another hour now. I'll keep you informed about any groundbreaking progress on Samarianne, but it's currently going slow.
I also bought a box of immortals and a box of praetorians for some future conversion work. Some of the bits are already planned to be used on Hope, others will become part of my AdMech priest and his minions...

OK, so nobody got my hint about derailing the blog...
Anyway, I've got the first proper news since reviving the thread:
Samarianne has still not reached a stage where I want to show her around (which might not happen before I've finished), but I've successfully disobeyed my own "no new conversions before finishing the PMW-project" order.
As I mentioned I bought some Necron boxes and when I browsed through the contents I found two bits that inspired me so much, I had to pursue my vision.
After a few hours in my workshop I'm half done with a totally fresh and almost unplanned addition to my inquisitor retinue, one of my favorite types of henchmen, a mancatcher.
I have my own way of picturing the three ordos of the inquisition and for me the ordo hereticus is the meanest and darkest and anything that underlines the inhumanity and cruelty of this institution, has to be part of a proper retinue. That's why for Inquisitor Iudex' retinue I have rather elaborated plans for a torture master, a head hunter and blood hound (thats Samarianne and Hope obviously), a tracker (you'll see one of those soon), maybe a trapper and last but definitely not least a mancatcher.
Iudex and his men have been in the planning for years and some of the related ideas are old and fossilized, which is both good and bad. They are well developed and thought through, but sometimes I'm also stuck with them. The mancatcher is one of the best examples, I always knew there had to be one, but I never got further than: guy with a pincer-like catching pole.
Until last night, I saw those two bits and thought they look cool, not that much necronlike, too round, too bulky... And than it hit me, they reminded me of one of those antique diving suits (which I always found massively cool and 40k-like, even before bioshock's big daddies).
Long story short, imagine a mancatching servitor, clad in an armor roughly styled like a bulky big ol' diving suit, armed like a roman Retiarius gladiator (net and trident, which is of course not a trident in this case, but the catching pole).
His name is Aequoreus and I'm really looking forward to show him to the (dakkadakka) world soon...

Firstly big apology for taken topic of track hint received load and clear, the mancatcher is sounding intriguing and totally with you on the antique diving suit look.
Will you be given some kind of net as an accessory and if so will it be some kind of energised net that stuns said victim when used
I see a divers helmet but instead of glass front it is full of sensors, night vision inferred and so on as to give him the edge needed as a mancatcher hope this is the case
Sounding good but hope it's not to long before some pictures arrive

Pinned and glued the feet in the right angle on Aequorius, which took forever. Have you ever put ork boots on a terminator's legs? Sounds crappy? Well, you'll see...
Oh and about his equipment, LDD. He has his catching pole, that is basicly an electrified giant pincer on a rod. He also has a wrist-mounted weapon, that rulewise combines needle pistol and webber gun. For the net I'm using the one from the dark eldar box, it's almost perfect for what I'm planning, and it will be shot from a special device, featuring a retractable chain and all.

Sounds pretty intense has my head spinning trying to put these parts together in my head, ork boots on terminator legs sounds wrong but I am sure you will make it work.
Weapon wise sounds like you have it covered quite a lot of stowage for one guy to be carrying but with that look it should work well, what are using for body and head ?
I dont know why but I pictured this guy as an ogre I guess it must have been the mancatcher that made me think that cant wait for pics hint hint at least the leg shot boots and termies legs

The body consists of the two mentioned necron bitz, but remains a secret until greenstuffed.
The head will be hidden by the helmet, which will be bitz and GS.

@Vik: Hehe, bad greenstuff work, awesome knitting... @Neil: The closeup of the helmet is a great reference for painting the suit in the end. I had copper, brass and patina in mind anyway, but the brown pattern on the copper surfaces is great! @LDD: Sorry for that mate, long time followers wouldn't have fallen for that, they know what a teasing bastard I am sometimes. Update: Spent the whole morning converting. The overall pose is set in stone or copper actually, the rest of the work will consist of shaping the seperate body parts a little further. Both arms and weapons are basicly done and just need minor detailing and some glue. For the legs I'll need to sculpt/improvise new shin/knee armor, because I have removed the GK ones completely. The biggest question at the moment is the back(pack). I have about 30 different tanks and pods, that I'll have to arrange harmoniously. Well at least a couple of them. I haven't found the right look yet. Symmetrical, asymmetrical? Really big, or reasonably small (within 40k definitions)? And so on... The helmet is untouched so far, but there is a basic shape on the model already and I hope some sculpting and detailing will yield the desirable results once I'm done with the backpack. Tonight I'll yield to the "public pressure" and grant you some new pics, but not yet of the Retiarius. Instead I'll show you two older conversions I digged up today and which I'll be painting in the coming months. Like I promised, some pictures! Biig pictures, feel free to zoom in if you dare, but be warned though, objects may appear as ugly as they actually are. First off, an almost unchanged vostroyan standard bearer from back when they were first released. I only replaced the puny sabre he was originally wielding by a more impressive one and built him a base, primed him and then put him on some shelve to collect dust. I do mean to paint him though, it's an awesome miniature, I fell in love with on first sight. The fact that he fits nicely into my inquisitorial troops, with the all the other former vostroyans I'm preparing, yields a certain chance he will actually see some paint soon. (I use "yield" a lot today...strange) And the second one: An especially ugly fella straight from some storage box. It's actually Leonard Rankenstein (cheasy, I know), member of the Ordo Xenos, and I have toooons of fluff about him, because he's one of the main characters of the 40k novel I've been writing for a couple of years. I've actually started him in 54mm back then and he's still waiting to be completed one day. This 28mm version (which doesn't really look like Leonard is supposed to) was meant as a character for a campaign I started (and soon canceled) back in 2004. I converted it in one afternoon (not my best performance but I had to be quick) and another guy painted him (baaadly ) in a couple of sessions. It was all about speed on both sides. I'm considering to touch up/strip the paintjob and maybe replace the blocky =I= symbols by something more subtle, because I really like the weapons and how the head blended in with the body.

well the only thing i could point out that shows this might be a bit of a rushed job on your part would be the mouldlines to be seen...not that many but they are there...
the paintjob isn´t that bad ...or rather many times better than what i can come up with so far^^
the vostroyan standard bearer looks powerful and ...did you change thewhole arm or is that bearer bareskinned on his arms? the banner is by far atm the most powerful detail there and i would love to see that done simply for that detail... all that gothic sceneic details!

Ha ha . The man yields at last , on your knees man, and we might spare the critics tongue ( sarcasm ) The vostroyan is a great model , and you have done a lovely job of his base , it seem almost perfect , Get some slap on him hes a bute. stein, well he looks like his inspiration that's for sure. His paint job maybe be rushed but its still pretty , and the blue and white is an unusual scheme for a servitor/ inquisi man, i sometimes for get how long you have been doing this stuff baiyuan, having only seen your most recent work , saw in PDH's blog that you have been collecting for twenty years? and have a loat of bits at you disposal , man , that's dedication. I myself, never really gamed or collected , just WD's really and the odd blister pack , now i have a few boxs sat around waiting to be pulled apart for the next conjuration , it feels so very different to how i remember this hobby. Then it was all about collection, and each pewter/lead piece was a rare gift, like wetyskeemians blog. now the plastics are better sculpted lighter and more varied , but with 20 in a box its about huge armies , and no character, ( you could argue with all the bits they supply your armies are even more varied ) ,but i guess its this idea that its its okay to make just one or two minis from a box of 20
and add loads of details and character that really pulls us back into the creative aspect , its makes me wonder why GW dosent show anymore support for these small skirmish kitbash games , i have spent a lot more on boxes of bits just so i can use one or two pieces than i would have if i was creating a whole IG cadian army. You know that picture link you sent me on the blog, ( thanks for that by the way ,i joined warseer just to comment on his amazing army) linky http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=225861&page=25 that guy
must spend a fortune on kits , but when i think about it this hobby is no more expensive than any other , and i guess you get back what you put in.
sorry fro the ramble matey just felt like flapping my gums, so i guess what i am saying is .. its cool to see that you have regular minis barley unconverted as well as the more creative highly origuinal examples , keep it up mate, and glad the divers helmet colour helped

@Vik:
The standard bearer is so gorgeous I couldn't bear changing anything but the blade.
@Neil:
20 years, that's Peter. I've been in the game for about 15 years now.
I used to be a collector of huge armies too, my completely unpainted and mostly unassembled tau army bears testimony to this fact. (1 orca, 1 tigeshark, 1 barracuda, couple of hammerheads and piranhas, 50 firewarriors, more than 100 drones, 40+ battlesuits and so on...)
But before such madness, I was a crazy converter already. I think I'll have to take some pictures of the first two miniatures I painted, then it becomes obvious...Wait a second...
OK remember, it's all Neil's fault... No seriously I meant to put my first miniatures up here anyway, it's always interesting to see where one came from.
This is how it all started for me:
When I was about fourteen I saw some cute looking toy soldiers in a local gameshop and mainly found them funny for their comiclike looks (the old metal catachans that is).
I asked the guy what game they belonged to and he played a testgame of 2nd edition 40k with me and I decided SM are the coolest.
For christmas I got the starterbox from my parents and I took the marines and primed them black.
Then I found out there also was white primer and white it was.
Then I found out there was dark angels green and since DA were my chapter, I primed them green.
That's how far they ever got, I never painted them, because they sucked and instead I wanted those new versatile plastic marines and some characters.
The following miniatures date back to that time when I was about 15 years old and they are arranged in a chronologically order, the first actually being the first tabletop miniature I ever painted.
See, right from the start I was unable to leave miniatures as they came.

"Eye for detail" indeed. I can't believe I've never found this plog before. You "upgraded" Delaque conversions are my personal favourites, but then again I do have a secret love affair with those models.
Your first models look really nice too, I don't really remember what my first looked like but it was no where near as good as that. I wish I knew where mine were, I know fine well that I won't of chucked them, for the nostalgia effect if anything.
Cheers, BT

well this is a case of serious undervalueing of your own work... i think they look very good... and for your very first models ever you show a great ability there... also i noticed...yep you are a converter even on the very first shot and this i think makes you very special! the amount of painted details i think is quite shocking...how you present it is making me chuckle^^
that blade of the lizard rider for one is something i think i have to nick as an idea... the blade looks very nice to me and you are even a painter who didn´t suck at blood and gore so early on...which most peeps do...

Thanks guys.
@Bloodthirster:
Welcome! I agree, the Delaques are my big love too, though Cortaro, the buzzsaw ogryn, is imo my best conversion so far.
@Vik:
Thanks, nick away! About the blood, I had my own recipe for that back then, it was a mixture of red, brown/chestnut, black and flesh inks and I had a premixed pot of it.
