Interesting question popped up during this army list discussion.
If you assault a transport vehicle that is part of a squadron, would the passengers from all squadron vehicles be able to Overwatch?
Example: assault a squadron of 3 Ork Gunwagons ( IA:8), only making it into B2B with one, would the units in all 3 transports Overwatch?

Did you declare a charge against the unit? Yes. They get to Overwatch, all of them. Also, Overwatch is handled before charge range is rolled, so you'd have no idea whether or not the charge is even successful when the Overwatch occurs.
The Assault Phase Summary Section
"Charge Sub-phase
In the Charge sub-phase, you declare charges and your models move into close combat. Close combat is where two units from opposing armies are in base contact with each other. If there are more than two units, it is called a multiple combat and discussed later in this section.
1. Declare Charge.
2. Resolve Overwatch.
3. Roll Charge Range ( 2D6" unless otherwise stated).
4. Charge Move.
5. Declare Next Charge or Finish Charge Sub-phase."

Yep, no question. If you successfully charge a squadron of vehicles, they have all been assaulted (as damage from the assault can destroy all of them, even if only one squadron member is in contact with the chargers).
So passengers aboard any of the transport vehicles that were assaulted would be allowed to overwatch.

While the rules question has been resolved, I'm having trouble thinking of a vehicle squadron that this is (currently) relevant to.

it looks like battlewagons are still transports and can be taken in squadrons. and it is an old rule, but how were war machine detachments supposed to work?

Forgeworld Ork Big Trakks are a good example. They can be selected as a Vehicle Squadron of 1-3 Big Trakks. They are a Heavy Support choice in a Codex: Orks army. Transport Capacity for this model is 12. Another good example is the Forgeworld Gun Wagon. Same idea, but 10 model Transport Capacity. Same Squadron size.
For a non-Forgeworld example, squadrons of Tau Piranhas would work the same way. The attached Drones are considered to be embarked passengers. Assaulting a squadron of 5 Piranhas would result in 20 S5 AP5 Pinning, Twin-linked Overwatch shots (10 Drones with 2 shots each).
