When you build a Mek gun based on the instructions, you put a Gretchin on the platform beside the barrel of the gun (see pic)
Spoiler:

Is that Gretchin considered a crewman, or are only models on their own base considered crewmen.

This is important, because the rules for artillery stat that to be able to shoot both the gun and the crew must be able to draw LOS and gretchin have many many problems drawing line of sight, but the gretchin mounted on the gun would have LOS on most things that the gun can see. For instance, Mek Guns couldn't go behind an Aegis because Gretchin can't see over the ADL.

I'd consider that Grot as decorative, not crew.

You have all sorts of problems if you consider it as crew (it has no base, it's on top of another model etc).

I was thinking the same question as the original poster. My immediate reaction was no just as grendel said, but as I thought about the model as a kit they give you enough for the 2 extra grot crew and an ammo runt. SO depending on how you look at it the grot on the gun could be considered part of the unit or the ammo runt. One of the grots they supply you with actually has the oil cannister and could be seen as the ammo runt instead.

For the most part I am leaning towards no.

The Eldar artillery is built with one guy sitting down on the gun, and one guy who can either stand on the gun, or on his own base. I play ignore the guys on the gun, and each gun will have two guardians on bases.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Yeah, "models" like this are screwy and confusing. It has been an issue ever since the IG heavy weapons teams current models(when they first came out they were 2 separate models on the same base).

As a guard player i get the benefit of free guardsmen with my models, you poor guys sort of need to buy an extra box of guys for yours (or simply do some extra accounting)

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.
