Just now I was rummaging through my DVD cupboard and pulled out a little white tub... And found my first ever painted minis.

So let's have some firsts!

  • The first figure(s) you ever bought yourself?
  • The first figure(s) you fully or partly painted? (if not the same?)
  • Bonus Round: The first figure you thought, "Yeah, you know what? I'm proud of that!"

  • If you don't have pics, that's okay too - I thought I'd lost my guys to the attic.

My first ever figure was this old thing: (Not my pic)

I've never painted it because I was going to paint it with my father... Over 15 years later and we've never got around to it. I should.. do that. [Uncomfortable realisations]
He should have a rider and a standard, I gave those to a friend, assuming I'd never want them. Absolutely my favourite monster figure I own for so many reasons.

The first figure I ever painted was this... chunky little woof-woof, bought for something like £1.50 at the first war-games show I ever attended. I thought he was marvellously feisty.
Happy to see me happy, the pet chemist bought a pair of scenic bases, and a Westwind Loup Garou to go with. We sat in my tiny student flat the next day and he very patiently showed me how to paint (he'd do one flagstone and I copied it onto the rest, and so on).

I believe it's a Cur & King resin base, I thought it was reet natty:

I'm yet to do a real "I'm proud of that" figure, the one I was most happy with was entered into a local GW painting competition and stood on by a child. I still have it, but redoing the entire thing killed my buzz.

First models I got were the old five pack of marines back in 1996. First ones I painted too, though I recently stripped them down for repainting.

Luckily, my first models are some of the few images I actually have! Did a trio of Big Shoota boys from the AoBR (5th ed. starter) set, which was also my very first wargaming purchase. The pics aren't quite at the finished point - I think I may have touched up where details spilled over onto the pants and I know that I added some shading to the bone (teeth and skull hairpiece) and cleaned up the base rims, all before a matte coat.

To round off the firsts, I'd have to say... these. For a first effort, I'm quite proud of them. Proof positive that it pays to do your homework, but there's no substitute for experience - I had been lurking Dakka for months before trying my hand at these and I still made mistakes, but I avoided a lot of major pitfalls. Beyond that, what really got those results was patience - I spent ages on these guys because I insisted on making them good (my sense of it at the time, at least). Most of what has improved in my painting isn't so much the final results (I've gotten a bit better, at least ), but the speed, comfort, and understanding with which I can achieve them. Perhaps, one fine day, I'll paint something that gives me equal pride, but it'll likely have to be a far cry better than what I can do, now!

It's not my first ever, but my first 40k mini was the 3rd ed metal captain. I tried to replicate what I saw online, which was the 3rd ed paintscheme at the time. I guess I get points for trying at least Here he is, standing next to my much more recently painted Marneus Calgar:

As for the first model I felt proud of, it was probably that captain. I've felt proud of just about everything I've painted, even if a year later I know I can do better. I have whole armies I don't use just because they don't look as good as the new ones.

Ha, these are all awesome things to start with!
I love that captain, I have an unpainted copy that I'm going to give a little flag to, and leave on my hat when I go to events. Stops people trying it on, which is my grossest pet peeve.

Any reasons you picked those particular models that you can remember?
