I was looking to start a very small side project based on the background to a space marine army. i would like to eventually field the army as a whole, so preferably one that has a set of rules to use

I've not read that much into any 'said' chapter, but i've read a few of the battle novels, such as Rynns world, the imperial fist one fighting Tzeentch, and the black templars. I love the idea of space marine stories so it would be great to hear what you guys like best and why?

Even successor chapters would be good to read on I myself quite like the idea of Grey knights being the elite of the elite, and how specialised each marine is, but i've not read alot like i've stated.

Whats your favourite?

The Black Templars are the best and the only background that I don't like is the Grey Knights due to Mat Ward

Yeah mat did ruin the story... but the idea of them is still good why do you like the templars so much??

My personal taste in Marine chapters angles towards the Dark Angels. But to be fair, I like guilt-ridden heroes with a lot of baggage, so yeah.

The Black Templars just look the coolest, they're the largest 'chapter', each marine trains neophytes who fight alongside them etc.

Grey Knights have the best background, by far. All the other chapters are broken in their own little ways, but the GK are very broken in specific ways, and that is the epicness of the hero story.

Charnel Guard is my favourite chapter. Minotaurs and Red Hunters are pretty cool as well.

Astral Claws. There is something very refreshing about the idea of 'those guys are pricks. Viva la Revoultion!' that 40k doesn't actually have. Everything is all about religion and the power of gods. But a Tyrant born from the Tyranny of another bureaucracy AND the aftermath AND becoming Space Pirates. I can't think of any other Chapter that changed that much throughout 40k.
