Hey guys and gals! I wanted to take a second and ask what people prefer? I personally refuse to play with any of my models that are either unpainted or even half built. Unless it's fully painted, built, shaded etc. I absolutely refuse to put it on the tabletop. Now I don't really mind if others do it if they JUST got into the hobby or it is their like 10th army but at least have 1 fully painted army Ya know? I recently played a guy who was really confused and Kind of a dick about the fact I only play with painted armies. So when you play do you prefer painted armies? Or do you mind placing a sea of grey? Let me know what you think!!!!

This belongs in General 40k, as it is not a rules inquiry. That said, I prefer to play with and against painted stuff. It's just so much nicer!

Welcome to the forums!

I prefer to play with and against painted armies, but that's not a deal breaker by any means. The bigger deal breaker is "Is this guy a jerk? Would I avoid him in the future?" If the answer is yes, then I decline and shake his hand the next time he offers a game.

It depends on how you expressed yourself, but it is possible that it wasn't the other guy that was the dick in that conversation...

From a rules perspective there is nothing saying you must paint models for them to be fielded.

But you know, from a General 40k perspective, painted armies are nicer.

Playing against painted army (or with a painted army) is more enjoyable for sure. But I switch army so often that I wouldn't keep myself from playing the game (it can take me 1-2 month to get the motivation to paint a 1k army lol). So I play sometime with grey army, but I'm slowly working toward getting rid of this habit.

It is interesting that someone was weirded-out about you fielding a painted army.
Typically something of that nature is that they feel embarrassed.

Anyway, yes painted is preferred, looks alone why not like it?
I am recovering from some rather involved and heated talks of this nature:

As shown, it comes up quite often and both groups get quite upset with each other (I found myself getting riled-up so I cannot claim I too was not to blame).

Trying for a middle of the road approach:
1) A newly assembled army (like just released) should not be commented on, they want to play NOW!
2) A brand-new player may not have the skills and be figuring out their options: not much point in worrying about it, better yet, inspire with your own painted.
3) Progress with their armies should promote tolerance, it is nice to see them progress!
4) The quality of the paint job is not quite as important as the effort that went into it: we are all learning and if they have "good coverage" it is a plus.

Where I personally get I guess you could say "fed-up" is the same or different "grey legion" is fielded and you just know they have no plans to go further.
The bare minimum is expended to play a game.

The source of my problem for this is anyone outside of the game who views these bare plastic models being pushed around would think it is a rather ugly and uninspiring game.
I will not go further unless asked something directly but the "circular" arguments these discussions tend to get into are unhelpful.
