I can't find an Area of Effect rule in the book....would Abaddon's Warlord Trait, or any model's area of effect stuff, work while embarked? That is, would/could it be measured from the vehicle's hull if the model's special rules didn't specify that it doesn't?

I thought that at least used to be a thing, not sure about in 7th though.

Thanks!

So, we have an effect that requires us to measure from one model to another to see if it gains a special rule?

Normally, we would measure from the base of model A to the base of model B (as described on page 10 of the rulebook), but in this case we can't, because model B isn't on the table. However, page 80 - Vehicles - Transports - Embarking and Disembarking - Embarking gives us this rule:
{...} If the players need to measure a range involving the embarked unit (except for it's shooting), this range is measured to or from the vehicle's hull.
Which gives us permission to measure to the vehicle instead.

Practically, this means that putting such 'aura' effects into vehicles increases their range (or at least the area covered by the ability). Beware though, there are some rules that alter how they work when embarked (such as the Ork Kustom Force Field).

Ah ha, cool! Thank you for the page reference as well. This will help out the obliterators if they're fighting space marines when they come in via dreadclaw while the war master is a spartan.

Fun fact: You can stick AoE-givers in flyers to make their effects super-big (even though you only count the hull, its still big) as well as super-mobile. You could, for instance, stick Abaddon in a Dreadclaw or a Storm Eagle, or an Elysian Command Squad's Long Range Scanner in a Valkyrie.

Give that Storm Eagle the 12" dirge caster legacy for extra lulz.

Just remember that you have to measure from the hull of the vehicle (not the base) and would therefore have to measure diagonally to the target models. If you're just measuring a 12" bubble, then you're not really measuring to the models; you're measuring to the air above them.

Yes, this also makes it difficult to capture objectives with a lot of flyers.

The answer: Adjustable flight stands!

Been there, done that. /guilty. (Abaddon + Chosen Terminators in Storm Eagle with a Fire Raptor flying support)
