Hello there,

this is my first bigger all-red model and currently I am stuck at the edge highlighting as I am not sure what color to use. Mixing white with the red will obviously not work and currently I am considering to use simple white or something orange/yellow-ish. I don't want to ruin the model straight away and like to keep the dark tone.

Any suggestions from experienced red painters is highly appreciated

Looking good so far!

With highlighting red, you have a few options. You can use orange for a really warm vibrant look going up to yellow for a hot looking red. Or if you want something less extreme than orange, a flesh colour (something like Dwarf Flesh or whatever they call it now) for a warm look that's not quite so in your face. You could also mix in a bone colour for more of a dull look, or a grey, or a bit of beige and grey together. You can use mixes of any of those in combination to get the effect you want.

Actually, either of your ideas will work, it's just a matter of taste. White and red will make them pink highlights but sorta cools the mini while your yellow/orangish idea will maintain a stronger sense of color and warmth. Either one can be highlighted up to almost white too. But the more eye-catching minis around typically do the orangish route.

I am not a fan of using white to highlight any color other than near-whites, because white comes out transparent with one pass, and you don't actually *get* white.

For SMALL models (infantry sized) Wazkada (or however you spell it) or Evil Sunz are nice shades to brighten red, and Fire Dragon Bright or Troll Slayer Orange are nice to give a crisp highlight.

For LARGE models (vehicle sized), the reds are not visible, and even the oranges can get lost -- it's a thin line on a very large surface. Because of this, I use a color like Fire Dragon bright first, and then highlight again over many of the areas that would catch more light with Ungor Flesh.

Here is an example of a model I just finished, though it's Mephiston rather than a Khorne red -- with the edges highlighted in FD Bright + Ungor Flesh:

Spoiler:

Cadian flesh is also not bad.

Thank you guys for the input.

In the meantime I have corrected some flaws from the masking tape on the checker pattern with a brush and brightened the orange a little bit in the middle of the vehicle. Some other parts may be seeing some yellow later on. So, I think going with orange/yellow edges may be too much - espescially when it is on an orange checkered edge. I like the Idea of a fleshy color and will probably try orange/flesh.

@Talys: Thank you for the example picture. I like the result and think it may work on a darker red, too.

My Troupes did not get any edge highlighting so far. I like how the red speaks for itself.
