Hello WHFB players! I almost never go to this forum, but I was curious. How many of you enjoy AoS, and why?

I'm enjoying it mostly because I can now get the 40k players in my group into it...and they really like it. It's not a bad game for a bunch of dad's getting together to play games and drink beer. I find myself playing units just for fun, just because I like them. I also really like the streamlined rules, and we can get several games in in a night instead of spending the night cross referencing rules all the time (WFB and 40K).
With that said, WFB was my favorite game system. I really liked the big blocks of infantry, expansive magic system and intricate movement.

"Orkses never lost a battle. If we win we win, if we die we die fighting so it don't count. If we runs for it we don't die neither, cos we can come back for annuver go, see!"
I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness. ADB |

Hmmm, Poll not working...
So....
No - Other I avoid AoS because the rules are awful - no tactical depth, and no attempt at balance.
One step lower than 'No - The Rules Are Worse' - while they are worse... they are different enough from WHFB that it should be judged on its own terms. It should not be compared.
Unfortunately, even on those terms, AoS is pretty danged bad.
Being free has no influence on the rules - Kings of War has free rules, and is a better game than any edition of Warhammer since 3rd. (3rd... edges it out, but not by much - and part of that may be nostalgia.)
There was very much a disconnect between 3rd edition WHFB and 4th edition - with the complete revamping of the magic system as the most noticeable.
But, while I preferred 3rd... I had no problems with playing 4th (or 5th, or 6th) - I skipped 7th (I kept intending to get it, for the minis if nothing else, but didn't), and avoided 8th like the plague after reading the rules.
It felt like GW just kept making the same mistakes, but louder in each iteration past 5th. (While having enough minis to make the box worth getting.)

*EDIT* Odd - I entered my reply and the poll started working... I don't know, me.

The reason I bought rules and became a real wargamer was because I wanted a properly thought out structure to govern the action instead of just making things up as I went along. |

I really like AoS. I can't put my finger on why exactly, but I just didn't enjoy WHFB 8th edition. Since AoS has come out, I've resurrected my night goblin army and added some new models too. There are a few things I don't like, like Sudden Death but that's not a surprise since I play a horde-style but all in all, I think the game is good.
I'll be getting the big book and the first book of the Realmgate Wars soon to try out the 'missions' with my group of friends.

Welcome to Dakka. Before you make a thread please check to make sure the topic is not already covered by an existing thread -- as is the case here; please see OP for link. (N.B., polls do not make an otherwise duplicative thread unique.) Experience shows it is more convenient for everyone to have one instance of a conversation at a time. Thanks!
