The Planet Atlis is, long abandoned by the Imperium as cost prohibitive to restore after a mundane plague killed 70% of the work force, has seen chaos forces attempting to extract some long lost relic from a warehouse district between two corporate compounds.
One force, consisting of 4 guiding warlords is made up of an armored Crimson Fist element, Grey Knights, a successor chapter of the Iron Hands that still uses heresy era gear and orders of battle, and Ultramarines with a Knight Errant in tow. They believe the artifact to be a powerful psykic dampener that can shut off access to warp powers across an entire solar system. This is evidenced by the absence of any but the most powerful psykic powers on the planet Atlis and the strong presence of Khorne Marines on the planet.
The other force is the PDF of the former planetary governor, who abandoned by the Imperium, has gone to desperate measures to deny the landing forces (Chaos and Imperium) any hold on one of his cities. Supported by a Rogue Trader who has put Atlis under his dynasty's rule, the governor has put his guard elements into the field, hired two Freebootaz bands, and allied with a genestealer Patriarch who promises to leave with his followers and pets if he can be given the relic (which the Hive Mind believes converts necrons into usable bioenergy). Rumors of an Astra Militarium force being dispatched and a Farsight Enclave strike team in the area have motivated all to move quickly.
Round 1) Both forces attempt are racing to move the Chaos Forces, now revealed to be Word Bearers under a Lord Marduk, and be the first to grab this sought after relic. The Word Bearers have ravaged this area of the city, and have built two strongpoints over subterranean shafts that hide those working to extract the relic buried below. No labor force seams apparent but evidence of massive slave labor projects have been found. Both forces remove perimeter chaos forces from the abandoned compounds and begin the charge forward. To both forces horror, the relic, if it is the source of the dampening, allows gates to be opened and out of it bloodletters come pouring. But other than that surprise, the chaos forces provide little more than token resistance and do only superficial damage to forward units.
Round 2) (only the Imperium Marine invading force's turn) Now the Marine's are gaining momentum and finding range on the swarming mercenary elements... time will tell as to the response from the planetary force and what other surprises the Word Bearers have in store... and maybe other outside forces too... game paused until next session (luckily it will stay setup until then)
