Hi lads!

I saw this pictures from some models that ThirdEyeNuke did once:

I asked her why she did the red and she sayd she used vallejo turn signal red and with an airbrush. I have that same red (and an airbrush btw) but seems impossible to get that color as the original turn signal red is a much lighter (almost pinky) red..

I was wondering how could you make that red? I own basically all the vallejo metallics for airbrush but I tried mixing it with gold, brass, black ... but I can't reach that color.

I ask this because I'm colorblind (I can see colors but I have some issues sometimes) and is hard to identify!

Thanks.

It does look very bronzey. In fact there are patches of bronze showing through in some nooks and crannies. A possible undercoat or ground colour?

I'm sooo, sooo sorry.

Turn signal red is quite a bright red, you might need to do it over a black (or dark brown) base coat and slowly build it up with an airbrush to create that dull red effect, or maybe mix it with some dark brown to dull it down.

I've seen people who are going for a sort of iron man red use gold as a base coat and then airbrushing tamiya clear red over it. Might be too shiny for what you want, but you can then dirty it up with a black or brown wash.

Gold is generally the base as a silver will wash it out a bit. Keeps it looking warmer.

This isn't so great, but it's a bronze undercoat and P3 red ink iirc, was a while ago.

How are you trying to do the red at the moment? What are you using as a base?

The thing is she said she uses signal red. I will try to mix it with bronze or brass.

I really wanted to try to make that color by mixing and then apply a basecoat of that color to start working with it instead of basecoating in bronze and then applying the red. Will keep trying.

Thanks!

I've used signal red over a black undercoat and it didn't look like that it has much more of a metallic look to it.

This how mine came out, painted by hand not airbrush.

I'm guessing its been washed to darken it down and then reapplied on some of the edges as a highlight.

So how are you currently trying to do it?

To me it looks like there was a black basecoat and then the effect has been achieved by *gradually* building up the red metallic with an airbrush until you get the tone your desire. Then after that you probably hit it with a dark brown oil wash (clean up the raised areas with a tissue, cotton tip, etc) and then finally an edge highlight possible done with silver + turn signal red. Looks like there's a couple of areas that she went back and post-shaded with a airbrushed black at the end (or probably before the edge highlight).

What she has is obviously a lot darker than turn signal red, but since she told you that's what she's using I'm guessing she used a technique that tends to make red look duller like the method I'm describing.

I'd have to test it myself to know for sure though, which is largely why I'm asking what you've already tried since it saves me experimenting myself

I think you'd really struggle to achieve the same result without airbrushing.

The thing with airbrushing, you can make the same colour look *completely* different depending on what you use as a base colour and how thick you build it up. It was one of the first things I learned while airbrushing, my first few Saurus I started with the pale green and then airbrushed the dark green, then I decided it would probably be easier to do the dark green first and airbrush the pale green but no matter how I tried I could not get the same effect because dark green sprayed over the pale green looked more yellow than if it was done straight over the light grey primer and the pale green would always look dull if sprayed over the dark green while it'd look vibrant when sprayed over the light grey primer.

The exact same colours, but change the order you spray them and you get a completely different outcome.

I tried to create a color like that instead of using different layers, to be able to airbrush a lot of guys with that color at the same time, as with layers can come inconsistency and is obviously more time consuming but I will never ever be able to create that color by myself, between being colorblind and ignorant

I'll try to buy a metallic red for airbrushing or just paint them with a non metallic red as always.

Other option can be to get the metallic medium from Vallejo and try to create the metallic with normal colors and then adding the medium. Will update if I find a way to make a good metallic

Or you can take the turn signal red and mix dark browns (like Rhinox Hide) or blacks to get a dark red metallic straight away.

Will try that. Would mourfang brown work? will try that too. I was trying to find another brand that made metallic paints to have it easier.

Mournfang isn't really a dark brown, it might dull out the red a bit but won't make it much darker.

Tamiya and Gunze both make metallic reds as well, but again they're both on the more vibrant side.

I did some blood angels tactical marines with a bit of a textured difference. I used a metallic red dry brush, it's a product called 'Inka Gold' comes in metallic blue, red, and purple(among others). It looks like a Mephiston Red version of Necron Compound. I found it at Joanne Fabrics for 8$, and it comes in like several ounces per jar, awesome shelf life.

I did some tests with gold and red ink and this is the result:

Is darker in real life and "redder". Will keep trying to improve the mix.

Try washing that in agrax earthshade, hit the model heavy with it but pull into the recessess, bolts and corners, then give it a very powdery light light light dry brush of necron compound or runefang steel.
