I just finished creating this garrisoned church and thought I would share since I took quite a few photos through the process. A lot of the ideas on how to construct it came from looking at a lot of online tutorials and photos posted on Pinterest.

Supplies used included:

1/4" hard board
Foam board
3/4" R-4 insulation
Drywall putty
Transparent scenic glue
Acrylic paints
Cut spurs (for spikes and twisted metal)
Floral wire (for barbed wire)
Fine and coarse sand

For the most part I believe the process should appear pretty straight forward based on the photos. But here's a step by step anyways.

1) use 1/4" router bit to shape the hardboard
2) draw basic layout on hardboard
3) Cut 3/4" R-4 pieces to desired shape and glue to board
4) Draw wall design onto foam board and cut
5) Glue first story walls to R-4 foam
6) Add fine and coarse sand to create desired texture (also add scrap foam pieces to create larger blocks of debris)
7) Add drywall putty to hardboard for ground texture
8) Paint everything on the 1st story black
9) construct 2nd story
10) Add fine and coarse sand + scrape foam for textures
11) Cut brick/stone shape into corner columns
12) Paint second story black
13) Add twisted spur pieces for metal effect and spikey bits
14) Twist up barbwire around a fat highlighter then prime white
15) Paint over entire structure and structural debris starting with dark followed by intermediate and then light. Highlight edges with really light gray
16) Paint ground with dark brown, intermediate, then light
17) Paint primed wire, spikes, and twisted metal with Citadel Leadbelcher and touch it up with a little Troll Slayer orange for a rust effect
18) Glue on barbwire
19) Flock (optional)

Here are some great online tutorials and resources that helped pave the way for this piece:

i have a couple questions if you dont mind

what tools did you use to cut the insulation? your supplies dont really list any of your tools, do you have a heated cutter or just scissors or what?

also i've worked with hard board before but i cut with a handsaw, what's the 1/4" bit you used to get the nice shape?

very nice terrain btw

just curious how long did you spend planning / outlining it before you started putting it together?
