The rule states "A model equipped with the Uncreator Gauntlet can use it in the Fight sub-phase instead of making its normal close combat attacks. To do so, nominate a vehicle model (friend or foe) in base contact with the bearer. If you choose an enemy vehicle, roll To Hit with a single Attack. "

Would that require the model to be in an assault, or just in b2b with the thing it wants to repair?

It's "instead of making its normal close combat attacks". If it's in a situation where it can't use normal close combat attacks (e.g. it's not in assault) then you can't use the Uncreator Gauntlet.

The Uncreator Gauntlet ability replaces x, so if you don't have x then you can't replace it with the Uncreator Gauntlet.

Caveat: I've no knowledge at all of the gauntlet other than what you've posted. I therefore know nothing of the RAI.

Well that's why I'm confused about it, since i've seen quite a few people talk about how awesome it is. If the Dominus has to be in an assault to use it, I don't see how it's good at all.

Even if you consider it from the offensive aspect, the Dominus would be better off just doing all of his haywire attacks.

Maybe if you fight, and there is a friendly dreadnought really close to you the fight ^^

I feel like RAI you should be able to hit the vehicle

RAI I always felt like I shouldve been able to do it to a friendly vehicle outside of combat but I never heard of that independent character rule till today
