I have a program at my store where I get employees started with 40K by giving them around $300US worth of product to start an army if they're interested. I have an employee who wants to take me up on this, but she's interested in doing a tyranid flying monstrous creature list and I have very little experience with tyranids. In most cases, I find that $300 gets you about 1000 pts., but if we can do better, great! I get that have hive tyrants and hive crones are the most important components here, but if she wants to not be going unbound, what troops make the most sense? Skyblight also looks great, but is almost $400 at minimum just by itself, so she'll have to start somewhere else and work toward that. Any recommendations? She's a new player, but she catches on to games quickly and is reasonably competitive.

A SkyTyrant formation might make a good start, and is a good addition to most any larger force. Then add a Tervigon, and two units of gaunts and you have both a CAD and a Formation.
That might be a good "starter"

Could start with wrath of the hive mind box set for $165 then add a few more MC's
The swarm box set is pretty good value also for what you get but obviously is more of a swarm than MC's but with a tervigon 1-2 flyrants and some other ther MC's could give a more balanced swarm/MC ratio
My partner has also just started with nids and she got the swarm box set and so far has added a flyrant, tervigon and a unit of genestealers. MC's now on the to buy list lol

Thanks for the help, everyone. We settled on Wrath of the Hive Mind, another hive tyrant, a hive crone, and a box of gargoyles, which went a little over budget, but not by much.

Sounds good. :-)
Best of luck to your employee
That box set does look good though, not available in the uk :-(. Might price up separately to see the difference as would be a good buy for the Mrs :-)

What about skyblight? Flying tyrant, hive crone, 2 harpies then minimum of 30 gargoyles. Then there's room for another flyrant in a hive fleet detachment and take a mucolid

Skyblight is the only one I'd consider. Obj Sec on 12" movement units that can respawn is huge. Throw in some Rippers in a CAD for more Flyrants and you have pretty much everything you need right there. I'm not a Skytyrant fan. So much death when Nids honestly can't be wasting points anymore. Even just building up to it until you get it later down the road. But, magnets on the Tyrant are your friend either way so it's the same models either way.
