I've 1850 points of tau painted up and ready to go, but I'm fairly confused as to how you find a game. Do you just show up at Gee dubs with your army painted and ready to go? are pick up matches really a thing? How does this all work out?

I've got a LFGS with a facebook group that organises battles every Monday evening. I would go down to your local, GW or otherwise, and ask. There's also GameFindr

Gone-to-ground in the craters of Coventry

A forum with weekly updates about games posted by most local clubs in the area.

But, this is the UK, where a large amount of games are played outside stores.
Every GW should have a Facebook page, so look on and post there.

Go in to store. Check who is there. Check if tables are free. Check if no one wants to play infinity or warmahordes. Play w40k. Pay for the table use.

There are a few ways,

Go the the store and talk to the clerk/manager/employee to see when people frequently come in for pick up games.

Check for a Facebook group or store Facebook or local forum.

You can also try the player finder on this website, that's how someone found me when they wanted to learn to play.

Step by step guide:

Step 1: Conjure up the courage and physical strength to drive (No way you are walking) to a store commonly known for people who stand for long periods of times.

Step 2: Bring your models in and only unpack the impressive stuff like as if you are at a black market and hope somebody comes over to get themselves into a bad deal.

Step 3: Make sure to give your prospect the devious look that they are a piece of meat, but at the same time grin like Mr Rogers and Bob Ross had a son. This will guarantee somebody will want to play with you.

Step 4: Begin going over preparation, get to know each other, and work out the kinks, like foreplay with SJW who might want to set rules you are not use to.

Step 5: Play.

Dakkadakka has a player finder option that can work sometimes. Often, the best bet is to check out your local hobby stores, give em a call, and ask if they have a dedicated 40k night (mine does). After that, go in, bring your models and grab a table, look for open players.

I sharpen up my axe and wait until a moonless night. Then I go out to the back yard with a large, flat bowl of my rune stones, draw a pentagram on the ground, and grab a chicken and a goat...

Or I just wonder over to the FLGS on a Friday or Saturday night. If I want a game during the week, I'll post on the Facebook page of my FLGS "Looking for a game tonight at 6:00pm! Anyone want to play?"

My flgs has a weekly 40k Night. I imagine something like that would be a good excuse to bring your army and meet people to play with. Our flgs owner is active in introducing new players to other players with similar interest, so if you have an flgs nearby, you could call and ask the owner or clerk the easiest way to get a game going.
