Hi Guys
Im getting ready to build up some more terrain, Ive got a table worth of dusty deserty ruined/intact buildings and i really want something with more colour but i really like the ruin aspect of the terrain. So i got thinking that i want to create some Jungle ruins but not like the old ancient Machu Picchu type stuff, I wanted to go with something like the ruins seen in the Jurassic Park movies so not really ruins just heavily overgrown intact-ish buildings. I have some reference pictures but pretty much only from Jurassic park. and ill watch the movie again because any excuse to watch dinosaurs is a good one and i might get some awesome ideas.
The materials i have thought of using so far are
- Hardboard/I think its called masonite like very hard cardboard woody kind of stuff for bases
- Foamcore for the buildings
- CD's for bases of just plant areas of terrain
- aquarium plants for plants various different shapes and sizes of plants, not sure how to make nice tree trunks yet
- bark, rocks, sand and flock for the texturing of the bases
My main reasons for posting is that im pretty new to terrain building and was coming to seek out the advice and knowledge of more advanced guys, Ive been through a bunch of threads trying to get some ideas etc but any advice from you guys on how to efficiently and properly build this terrain would be greatly appreciated. as well as other materials that have been used to make jungle terrain and buildings or even specific threads/tutorials that i might have missed in my research

You've got the idea for a really interesting and fun project there.
EMA Model Supplies, or a more local company of the same type, for a variety of architectural parts that can add great detail to simple models.
http://www.ema-models.co.uk
Plastic rod, tube, card, angle irons, girders, fencing, windows and doors, pumps and motors, and so on.
Embossed plasticard will turn a flat Foamcore board wall into a mason built wall instantly. There are patterns for pavements of different types, anti-slip pattern steel planking, and all kinds of stuff.

Close enough for me! That looks like a great resource. Check out this one for cheap and effective terrain ideas too: http://www.igg.org.uk/gansg/00-wargame/wg-index.htm

I'm hoping you intend to include a dinosaur skeleton / bones on a piece or two? Just as an easter egg?

Definitley, Ive got a good couple little dino bones lying around that could use a nice little re-purposing.

The awning could be archived fairly simply with a soup can cut into quarters. (Remove top and bottom with can opener, cut in half lengthwise with tin snips or aviation shears, then in half again. Be careful though as this will give you very sharp edges.
I've also been playing around with papercraft buildings recently. It may be worth your time to check out if you want cheap fast buildings. Keep in mind, paper will never be the same quality as resin or plasticard.

Ive made a whole bunch of paper craft containers and boxes, very infinity style terrain, I will definitly look into using the soup tin, how would you suggest i dull down the edges? I was thinking i could use something like fishtank tubing and cut it and attach it to the ends etc, that could work nicely.

Yes, tubing would work. You could also bend/fold the edge over but that may be more effort than its worth.

A bit emery paper around the edges should take off the sharp burr.

Keep us updated this sounds like an interesting project. Jurassic parks architecture design has always been a favorite of mine.

Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
and the ends of the earth your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel. Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son,
lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him. |
