I have recently gotten interested in 6mm scale war gaming. I would like to find a game system that is set in the Cold War era. I am looking for something that is a lot of fun but puts an emphasis on historical accuracy and a sense of realism. I don't mind a complicated rule set as long as the end results are an engrossing game. In fact I would prefer something that was maybe a little overly complex as opposed to something that was overly simplistic.

Any suggestions?

Cold War era in 6mm? That's pretty specific. I'm thinking, "Good luck with finding that." I think you would more than likely have to convert an existing modern war rules system. I could be wrong, of course.

we play 6mm using bolt action but just convert the inches to cm. we bought our models from heroics and ross. great value and great casts!

they do modern vehicles so should be easy to convert.

can just use bolt action rules and modify them to your leisure i.e ranges for particular weapons

Do you have any experience with either rule set? Is one superior to the other?

I like Cold War Commander though I sold off all my moderns a year or so ago (downsized hobby stuff dramatically in prep of a move to a much smaller place). I looked through the FFoT 'free' set but never played them. They have a Yahoo group that seems relatively active and folks do seem to like them.

CWC has similar mechanisms to GW's WarMaster rule set.

Another set I liked was Modern Spearhead, but I think they are out of print.

The first and most important question to ask is -

"What do you want each figure to represent? Does one tank represent one tank? Or does it stand in for a unit?"

If you're looking for one to one, then I think your only bets right now are Sabre Squadron and Team Yankee.

If you'd prefer the "one vehicle equals a small unit" option, then the other systems listed are all options.

I have not played Cold War Commander, but Blitzkrieg Commander (the WW2 rules from the same company) is quite good.

I've been asking a similar question over on TMP, consensus of opinion for my criteria (1:1 vehicle representation, 6mm scale, includes Fast Air and Helos) seems to be Sabre Squadron.

I think I am going to give FFT 3 a try. It was the rule set that jumped out at me the most. Thank for the suggestions everyone. I'll post a follow up of my thoughts on FFT when it comes in the mail.

There is an old rule set called Task Force that was published by GDW (Game Designer's Workshop) in the 1980s.

It is specifically for Cold War, and can handle up to an entire Division at 1:1 scale (Infantry is in squads or Platoons, at the choice of players. Vehicles at 1:1)

It is the forerunner of Command Decision, for which there is also a Cold War/Modern variant, called Combined Arms which can be found on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Combined-Arms-Miniature-Wargaming-Decision/dp/0943580323

These are probably the best rules I have come across.

Rather than playing the omniscient God of Battle which is the case with most games (where you can move every unit exactly how you wish), Command Decision based games (such as Combined Arms) require you to place orders for each unit, and you get a limited number of Order chits based upon the officers and NCOs you have in the game.

And, as per the Chain-of-Command in a regular military, only units within the Chain of Command can be given orders by a particular Officer/NCO.

• NCOs may only give orders to their squads.
• Platoon Leaders may only give orders to their Platoon.
• Company Commanders may only give orders to either the entire company, or to a specific unit WITHIN the company.
• Battalion leaders begin to have different capabilities, in that they are only allowed to order Company Commanders, or units directly in communication with the Battalion HQ. The Company Commander then has to use their order chit in a way that complies with the Battalion HQ's orders.

There are a variety of orders:

Halt, March, Advance, Cautious Advance, Cover, Overwatch, Recover, Rally, etc.

It is very similar to the original Epic 40K in some respects, but much more detailed.

I wish that I still had my Bundeswehr German and NATO Mech Infantry Division (which was regularly nuked by a Soviet Mechanized Division in Force Recon - The Ability to call in Apaches and A-10s in the 1980s was freaking overwhelming to the Soviets at the time, which would then lead to a Commissar pulling the trigger on a tactical nuke.).

There seem to be plenty of older CWGH games that are 1:1. I'm currently looking through a friend's copy of Challenger II, for instance. But there seems to be a shortage of them these days. The fact that there was essentially nothing on the market when Sabre Squadron hit (followed shortly thereafter by Team Yankee) is very strange.

Challenger/Challenger II were a bit too detailed for me. A couple of turns could take over an hour even with just company sized forces.

Cold War Commander is my go-to rules set for the era. There are others designed for 15mm or smaller scales, too.

- Modern Spearhead http://modernspearhead.net/
- Battlefront WWII (Fire & Fury has a set of PDF army lists for the Cold War era) http://www.fireandfury.com/extra/ordersofbattle.shtml#CW

I've spoken to a number of people what are also experimenting with Battlefront's new Team Yankee rules using 6mm miniatures.

The guy who owns Gamecraft Miniatures is working on this. It is based off of Tacforce from the 80s or something like that. Pretty crunchy, more so than any other of the games I have checked out.

There aren't unit lists or anything, but you can base armies of actual TOEs and such, using the points that are provided on the site.
