I am balling a frie doc mine get back into 40k with his guard, and trying to put together a competitive 1850 list. This is my first crack at it, and I would welcome any comments and critiques.

Culexus Assassin

Basic idea is the white scar librarians join up with the mega blob platoon of 50 guardsmen and the heavy weapon teams to buff and provide hit and run. Mega blog is the main anchor for the list. Psychers Buff blob and other units as needed. Priest joins infantry blob. Vets ride Valkyrie and give some mobility to grab objectives. Assassin rides the vendetta or infiltrate.

I would appreciate any thoughts.

Personally I love the list, I think it has a bit of everything, and will be a fun one to play. I'm no guard expert, but it looks solid.
Something to consider, though:

Plasma guns / metal guns argument.

For guard, as you know, your infantry aren't... the most durable, and rely a bit on numbers and cheap points to offset their toughness of 3 and 5+ armour save. Plasma guns will get hot eventually, and a 5+ armour save is not a reliable bet to take when trying to save yourself from overheating. However, they do outrange the melta gun, and rapid fire with strength 7, ap 2 weapons are never a bad thing! Just consider, though, that if you want a less risky option, go with metlaguns in your infantry squads. Which ever way you go dpedns on your play style though, so don't let anyone tell you one is WAY better than the other.

I agree with Quazza. if you ditch the 5 plasma guns in the blob that is 75 points. You could put 4 of them in your CCS and give them carapace to keep them alive a little longer.

I would Ideally put that CCS in a Chimera in which case you only need 2 plasma guns.

Your melta vets can drop one melta gun since only 2 can fire out. They can also drop the Vox since they cannot relieve orders in the Chimera, also consider dropping the krak on them, saving you a few more points.

Your valk should keep the multilaser and upgrade to multiple rocket pods. Making all the weapons worth shooting at the same target.

Same for your Russes. They are all over the place. eradicators are an excelent choice. (my personal favorite) but keep them with 3 heavy bolters same range, and same target saturation. Consider adding on heavy stubbers for more dakka.

The only problem now is you will be relying on melta vets and one vendetta for all your anti tank, and the vendetta will be doubling as AA as well.

Consider some melta bombs on those infantry sgts.

Lastly the HWTs, very fragile, very expensive, unreliable unless your are using prescience on them. Consider a second melta vet squad in place of them, or another anit tank russ. (squad 2 of the eradicators)

Wyrven are awesome, especially for their point cost, and most people will tell you they are a must. They fill the same roll as a eradicators but for less than half the point cost. They are worth the investment for sure.
