Hey all, just putting together a battle company (something I've always wanted to do but never gotten around to) and now they have rules it seems like a good idea to return to my old dream
I mostly play against IG (krieg), marines and chaos bit I'm trying to make an all comers list, especially as that suits the scions of Guilliman.

So here is what I have:

LIST 1:

HQ

Cato Sicarius - 175pts (joins the assault squad and gives melta squad Tank hunters)

ELITES

Venerable Dreadnought with HF, AC in a drop pod - 180pts

TROOPS

Tactical squad (10 man) with MG, MM and a Vet sarge with Combi-melta in a pod - 215pts

Tactical squad (10 man) with PG, ML and Vet Sarge with Combi-plas in a pod - 225pts

Tactical squad (10 man) with GG, GC and Standard Sarge in a pod - 225pts

FAST ATTACK

Assault squad (9 man) without jump-packs, 2 flamers and Vet Sarge with poweraxe and Meltabombs in a pod - 201pts

HEAVY SUPPORT

Devastator squad (10 man) with 2 Grav Cannons and 2 Missile Launchers in a pod - 275pts

TOTAL = 1496pts

OR

HQ

Chaplain - 90pts (joins Command Squad)

ELITES

Command Squad with Champion, Apothecary, Power Axe, Power Sword, Flamer and Stormshield in a pod - 200pts

Ironclad Dreadnought with HF in a drop pod - 180pts

FAST ATTACK

Assault squad (8 man) without jump-packs, 2 flamers and Vet Sarge with poweraxe and Meltabombs in a pod - 187pts

HEAVY SUPPORT

Devastator squad (5 man) with 2 Grav Cannons in a pod - 175pts

TOTAL = 1497pts

My aim is to not be too cheesy but still competitive. And yes I know Vet Sergeants are a waste of points but I like the fluff of it :p

Not a bad, well-rounded list.

You are built as the demi-company formation, so don’t forget the free bonuses.

Sicarius doesn’t need to join a squad to give it the bonuses. I might put him in with the assault marines (moved to a pod) rather then the tacs. Or cut the assaults/devs in half to free up points for a command squad.

I’d drop the beacons. Pods are accurate enough without, and you don’t want to DS your assault marines. Like the gun mix on the tacs though.

It might be worth cutting some points to get more guns for the Dev squad. You have the full 10 men to combat squad, but only two guns.

While I admire your adherence to the codex with the 10 man squads, I feel combat squads of the assault and devastators would serve you better. My core demi-co is 3 full tacs, with half AM/DMs. Should run around 1,000 points with moderate gear. Add in the dread and a command squad, and you should be looking at a 1,500 list.

Thanks for the reply

Sicarius is in the plasma squad as he has his pistol and just adds to it's survivability, his bonus is on the melta squad. However he may do more good in the assault squad as you suggest, I just figured the mobility of the jump packs would be more useful long term.

I've never been a fan of running small squads, unless I combat squad them on the fly, I dunno why, just personal preference I guess haha but I do have an alternate list I wrote before this one which replaces the dread with a command squad in a pod armed with champion, apothecary, banner, power axe, flamer and stormshield (200pts) for Sicarius to join. I was told melee command squads suck tho :/

Without the beacons and maybe the missile launcher on the dread pod I could get 2 more heavy weapons for the devs, I was thinking missiles maybe to add to the versatility of the grav cannons? Or maybe plasma cannons?

Melee is a bit rougher in this edition then previous ones, but it still works. Just a little harder then it used to be. Also, “people” here a least tend to be commenting on the higher end of competitiveness. What would get you vaporized at a major tournament might be just fine at your FLGS. But take all advice with a grain of salt. Including mine.

There is an old Ork adage “shoot the chopy ones, chop the shooty ones” Sometimes the thing shooting you off the table just needs an axe to the head. It can be hard to arrange, however, so be careful.

I can’t comment negatively on your command squad idea. Here is the shelf deployment of mine:
Spoiler:

The banner is not worth the points IMHO. I’d rather have spend them on another CC guy. But it’s a command squad, and banners should be raised proudly! They have done OK by me on the table the few times I’ve taken them out. Competitively you are better with guns and bikes on your command squads.

Plasma cannons are not really worth it these days. Scattering small blasts don’t cover that many guys, they occasionally kill you, and S7 is not what it used to be against things you really need to kill. Plus they can’t snap fire. In an ideal world, your dev squad should have 4 of the same thing. If you can’t do that, make sure the guns want to shoot at the same kind of targets. I’d take MLs over PC here. While MLs are a little mediocre against everything, they are at least OK against anything.

Haha I'm pretty sure it was your command squad that inspired mine funnily enough, I made a post a couple of weeks ago about how to arm them and I recognize that picture :p
Id probably go the second power weapon too now thinking about it, although I'd still model the banner for fluff, I've always loved them

Thanks for the advice, Ill probably go missile launchers then, I do like the models anyway and I have some pre-heresy ones to use. Although for the points I have available I could go 3 grav-cannons instead, sadly not 4 tho.

Have you had any luck with non-jump assault marines? It seems to make them weaker on paper (less mobility, no hammer of wrath, no re-roll charge range etc) and also if I don't deepstrike jump marines should I keep them in reserve? If I get second turn then they are kind of exposed alone on the board haha

I've put AMs in drop pods before. It was better when the pod was a free swap for the packs, but still pretty good. Turn 1, land and burn. If you live through the return fire, pile in and get with the chopping. Makes for a good delivery system for Cassius. They act a lot like a duel flamer tac squad.

Jump pack marines should keep out of LOS, advance with the rest of your forces, and then pop out and charge. Try to avoid giving people a clear shot at them until it's overwatch. It's one reason I like 5 man squads: easy to find cover and not have guys hanging out in the open. They are bully units. Find someone weaker, rough them up.

Hmm I'll have to give them a shot then

Now updated the first post with some changes based on your feedback

I'm tempted to find tge points to put the missiles back on one of the pods, but it's not essential

Go the Vet SGT. You got to believe if your guys.

Agree with Nevelons suggestions.

Worried I would have for your list:

1. Lots of little bugs
2. Fliers

Aurora SMs in 5th Ed (18 wins, 3 draws, 13 losses)

1st in Lords of Terra Open (Sydney) 2012

Aurora SMs in 6th Ed (3 wins, 0 draws, 5 losses))

Thanks for the reply Loricatus

I do worry about flyers, but sadly there is not much i can do as a pod list :/
I had considered giving the Devs 4 Flakk missiles but they arent that effective and they'd be on snapshots the turn they land anyway. I'll just have to hope Devestator doctrine and some lucky 6s on my Gravs can bring 'em down

What weapons are the non-specialist Devastators using?

If you mean the devastators who aren't using heavy weapons then Bolters, they can't have anything else
