I'm putting together a Chaos Grand Alliance army for my first tournament, which will probably be using the SCGT comp (not confirmed yet). Having never played in a tournament before, I want something that is fairly competitive but still (to me) feels fairly themed. This is what I've got so far (105 pool choices, so the warband list will have to be narrowed down slightly). Would this be a viable list, or does it seem too piecemeal?

1 x Chaos Lord
1 x Gaunt Summoner
1 x Great Bray Shaman
1 x Beast Lord

20 x Gors
10 x Ungor Raiders
3 x Bullgors
10 x Chaos Warriors (hand weapons)
10 x Chaos Warriors (hand weapon and shield)
3 x Varanguard

For a summoning pool I've got:

3 x Flamers
10 x Bloodletters
10 x Plague Bearers
1 x Chimera (for the Great Bray Shaman to summon)

Thematically I wanted it to be like a tide of disparate chaos troops, the dregs of the realms, with oversight from the Everchosen. On the other hand, it might seem like it could be picked off piece by piece quite easily, although the Chaos Warriors are surprisingly resilient. The Varanguard are the heavy cavalry, and the Bullgors are the heavy infantry, with the Beastmen as a harrassing force (and the Chimera as a horrible surprise ... )

Any comments very welcome!

Are you including the summoning pool in the 105? I'd say at 105 pools you don't have enough for much of a summoning pool (as the split would be deploying 95 pools with 10 in summoning). Might be reading it wrong.

I like the list thematically, but if you don't have to summon, the flamers would be useful on the board right away. If you're upping the total army count, perhaps another monster for the bray shaman to bring on would be useful.

Yeah, I think you're right - I still need to tweak the summoning pool slightly. From what I understand, if you have a summoning pool of 20, you'd deploy 90 initially. I'm presuming the chimera would count as part of that?

That's how I understand it, you get double the summoning room of the amount you take off the 100 for your war band, up to an 80/120 split.

I agree with your general analysis of the list, but I like it thematically. The scenarios in the SCGT pack are quite varied though. I'm not really sure myself of the best units for each one. I generally say play the army you like and things will work out from there.

It looks good.

Since you have Varanguard and the Gaunt Summoner, are you getting Archaon too?

The army looks fine to me.

I've tweaked the list slightly and now have the following:

1 x Lord of Chaos
10 x Chaos Warriors (hand weapons)
10 x Chaos Warriors (hand weapon and shield)
2 x Chaos Spawn
(Formation: Godsworn Champions of Ruin)

1 x Beastlord
1 x Great Bray Shaman
10 x Ungor raiders
20 x Gors (hand weapons)
3 x Bullgors

3 x Varanguard
1 x Gaunt Summoner

(84 pools)

For the summoning pool I've got:

10 x Bloodletters
10 x Plaguebearers
3 x Flamers
1 x Chimera

(32 pools)

That should be the total deployable warband, and I'll probably take some Blood Warriors and various Khorne heroes to take it up to 150 pools (and to swap in if the Beastmen prove unreliable!)
