So I feel like building a new army for 40K but can't decide. I know all three of these are considered by far some of the most powerful armies but they all appeal to me. I'll list some of my reasons:

Tau:
- Huge fan of mech suits
- One of the first models I started with
- Has a good start collecting box

Eldar:
- Friendship-destroyingly powerful
- Simple to learn playstyle
- Has wide range of nice models

Necrons:
- Easy to paint
- Terminators... IN SPACE
- Robo spiders

Each have there own models that I love (FW AoK, Commander Battlesuit, Wraiths etc). So because of these reasons, I can't decide... so dakka... help me choose!

Necrons have lost a lot of the terminators in space aspect and are more like tomb kings in space. They even use diplomacy and talk to people. Despite this they are still my third fav behind Tau and Dark Eldar because of the visual style.

Eldar ugh never. I have a huge bias against them so of course I'm going to say no.

Tau for the greater good. Bonus as the most hated faction in the game by ten thousand miles (Eldar are a second) you can feast on their tears and overblown disproportionate claims. There will always be talk of Tau but the downside its usually negative or the one positive guy being flamed.

Tau have style and suits. More mech suits than you can shake a stick at and almost all of them are good.

What are your goals?

Do you want to win consistently (when you can even get a game at all)?

Or do you want to make friends and consistently get games?

When considering Eldar it's probably better to think of the kind of army you want and ask about that. Saying Eldar makes people think think cheese and ugh.

Nobody likes Eldar or Tau. If they say they do they're just fooling themselves.

(Whispers) "Necrons"

One other issue people haven't mentioned is some people just act like a donkey cave towards you with Tau and Eldar (mainly Eldar). Your plastic models now make you a bad person. Congratulations.

Well, looking at what you've said, I've come to the following conclusions:
Warp Rider wrote:

Translates as: "I love huge robots, there's nostalgia here for me and they will be easy to get into collecting"

So, in conclusion: I'd go with Tau, you have more fondness for them and you have multiple units in the range that will appeal both aesthetically and in game. Avoid the Eldar as you're only attracted to them for their ability to curb-stomp people with little effort - and after the initial childish glee of ruining someones day that I'm sure all of us at some level would enjoy, I doubt you'd want to keep using them for just that reason after the first few laughs. The Necrons seem cool and easy, but you didn't indicate much fondness in the brief you gave.

So Tau!

Seriously, Gamgee. Read the 7th ed. fluff. You're just embarrassing yourself at this point.

Tau have a rather boring playstyle, sitting back and shooting most of the time, so it would be eldar or necrons. If you want large variety with multiple good lists and units, eldar is your best bet (Also note that noncheese eldar are not an easy to learn playstyle)
